So i'm midway through an auto to manual locking hubs conversion on my 1991 JDM LJ78, but my normal reference sources, ie the FSM for the KZJ70/HZJ/PZJ and the Max Ellery for the earlier LJ70 & BJ models all talk about:
- "wide/narrow" sides of the cage or
- "wide champher" ends of the cage,
and the star is described as having a flat side and a 'protuding side (which all the pics show as the star legs protruding below the face).

However my stars/cages doesn't seem to be well described by those terms.

The cage is within 0.2mm on either side. There is however a "D" shape to the ball position.
The cage does have a flat end (side is perpendicular to top) and a chamfered end but the width of both is again within about ~0.2mm

The star has a raised end

and a flat end

And the slots do seem to narrow / widen

the wide end (top of frame) is the flat end.

Are these type of CV's used in another vehicle that has a good manual for how they should go back together?

Or is anyone able to tell me which way they go?

Cheers

After a pile more digging stumbled across this: Birfield assembly in 80 series tech.

So i think the following applies to mine:
Star:
The flat face has a ~4mm chamfer(a guess at size) for assisting in shaft install. This end has the wider grooves for ball install.
The other end with the raised lip has a much smaller/sharper chamfer for holding the spring clip in.
This end has narrower channels and are not as shiny (due to less ball wear at that end of the assembly)
The flat face will be on the inboard/diff side on install.

Cage:
As near as i can tell from the other thread. The chamfered side faces you on install, ie. sits inbound.

not 100% so confirmation would be appreciated
