Hey all, total noobie here...

I used the search but I'm still confused - I'm looking into lifting my FJ and would like to support a local/US made company. Is Icon suspension the same people as the Icon old school landcruiser?

They are different companies - I think there might actually be in a lawsuit over naming rights.
That is like 15th hand so don't hold me to that.

ps - welcome to Mud! :flipoff2:

Good question as I was under the impression they were one in the same, being ICON is the old school FJ40 and the name is well know in the Land Cruiser community, then confused that they were not the same but have the same branded name as the ICON suspension has changed or evolved from OE style leaf and shock, to coil overs and then to link arm style. So very confusing to differentiate between the two.

TLC is Land Cruiser sales, restoration and service center in Van Nuys, CA and they can install any susp you wish, though I suspect OME would be their recommendation as most here would agree.

ICON which is a custom shop building the ICON and CJ3B Jeep as seen on their site.

And welcome:flipoff2:

Definitely different vendors.

TLC makes a retro 40 called the Icon.
Icon vehicle dynamics makes suspension parts.

Definitely different vendors.

TLC makes a ridiculously-priced modern copy of a 40 for yuppies with way too much money and no soul called the Icon.
Icon vehicle dynamics makes suspension parts.

Fixed it for you! :)

:rolls eyes:

:hhmm:Was not the company called Donahoe before changing their name to ICON?

Sort of; Donahoe Racing went tits-up after the owner went to the slammer for a child porn conviction. Some of his former employees/engineers formed a new company, Icon Vehicle Dynamics, and refined the same basic coilover design.

So guy goes to slammer, employees turn around and start new company under new name, that doesn't seen right or even legal.

Though the owner should have his junk removed.

That's the Reader's Digest condensed version; I don't know all the details or have an opinion as to the legality and/or morality of the new company. But they still make some of the best coilovers out there for IFS Toyota trucks.

Like Lee said, that's the short story for sure. Want a good read, search Pirate 4x4 and you'll find posts from pretty much all parties involved. IMHO, without the quick action of some key players, the company would have truly died, leaving the original owners with nothing. The way it worked out, most of the employees kept their jobs and a financial settlement was made to an "equitable" agreement...
