Ok.. so I dont know if this belong here or on the pain and body..but being that its a trailer I'll post here.. and mods move it if yah feel the need to....

I got this trailer that has baked paint on it.....

What would be the best way to rid the pain off of this thing ...
Its going to be painted blue like my truck... with some black on the fenders....

I thought of media/sand/ blasting.. but dont know much about these two or their pros and cons...

I already got the trailer off of the frame and looking for a place close by to do this... I love to do it myself but dont have the equipment to do so....

Any advise is well appriciated....

Thanks,,

Manu !!

Get an angle grinder and put a wire spool on it. It takes a long time and a lot of elbow grease, but you will eventually end up back to the bare metal. Tons cheaper than blasting it.

The trailer is powder coated. You can rough up the surface and paint over the powder coat. Or, you can sand blast it clean and prime and paint. Or, you can powder coat over the existing powder coat in a color you like.

I think RED is nice... ;-)

Mike

I would blast it, then your not picking all those little pieces of wire out of your skin and clothing. Red would be an awsome color for a trailer!

Thanks for the input guys keep it coming........ Mike, Red is nice but Blue........NOW yah taking !!!

I thought of doing the wire disk on a grinder but this thing is not small... and I dont think I could get at it the way blasting it would......

Has anybody done any DIY blasting at home???

Is it messy?
Is it worth it ???

Thanks !!!

Yeah man, I blasted my whole truck this spring. Messy? Oh yeah. worth it? Oh yeah. You do need the proper PPE for sandblasting tho and a place to do it.

PPE???
Do explain plz...

Personal Protective Equipment. Safety glasses, gloves, respirator, face shield, boots.

I got a quote of $175 to sandblast my tub. I think that is the easiest, less work and less mess route!

PPE thanks....
That estwood machine kit looks VERY interesting...

That would make for a great new toy !!! :flipoff2::flipoff2:

Im still looking around town for a quote of media blasting...
Boctor12 what part of the country you at ?....

I have no clue or idea how much they would charge for a job like this...

BTW I already pulled the box off of the frame...
I think I can fit it on the Taco's bed...
Im planning on blasting it top to bottom... except for the lid... it has a nice white color on it...

Where in SoCal eh...

Im in the San Dimas area... found a place round here but they never called back... found a second place but they want me to bring the whole thing to them...for a quote... problem is that its all pulled apart...

Who did you use.. was it media or sand blasting???

Gotta a phone and adress ???

I'll keep searching around and see if its worth doing it myself of paying for someone else to do it.... I gotta add in the " fun" and "bragging rights" if I do it myself....

Thanks boctor12.....

If it is a baked on finish, like powder coat, you'd be better off scuffing and squirting. Powder coat is WAY better in terms of adhesion than any paint... I would do a little homework before spending $ and ending up with something less than you started with. You might be really looking for a just a color change not a strip and refinish.

just another .02

Ah Mr. REZARF... thanks for the .02's.......
They are well appreciated...

BTW... your fab skill are saweeeet !!!!
Love that rig/trailer combo yah got there !!!!

Now, I dont know anything between powder coating vrs painting...so I'll ask this...

The trailer is powder coated with a red pain and its flaking more on some areas like the fender wells and the lower sides of the box.. Its also flaking inside the tub right by the lid... towards the rear.

Im afraid that if I bake it with a different color it might do so a few years from now...

Would a paint job last less than a baked on job ???

I hate to have it scuffed and just pain over it and then have the pain flake off cause the OG baked job keeps peeling off... I know that prep is and would be a key to have the paint last longer...

Im planning on rhino lining or LineX the inner wheel fenders and the interior of the tub as this would be a work/play trailer...

Thanks for all your input guys.. all this really going to help make a decision I can live with and afford at the same time....

I would clean the gravel nicked areas with a wire brush, sand the entire exterior and interior, but not try to get the powder coat off, just the loose stuff. You can then prime and paint the outside, and Line-X the fender wells and interior. - I would also Line-X the underside of the box, the front of the fenders and the bottom and front of the fuel cans. Since the box, tail gate and can holders are the only parts that need to change color, I think that this is the low resistance way to go.

You can powder coat over the old powder coat, but a color match to the 60 will cost a bit more. Original cost to powder coat was $250 - frame, lid, box and small parts.
