Hi guys, I just got a 73 FJ40 and it has a 305 chevy motor in it. it has a 3 speed and I will like to install a 4 speed tranny.
What are your suggestions of what kind of tranny I should get?? do I need different t/case?
Do you guys have the stuff?
thanks!

Many options avail you. Mostly what's your desire?

H41 and H42 Toyota xmissions will bolt up to your 3spd tcase, but will require either bellhousing adapter or plate adapter to engine. H41 will have granny, while H42 will be similar to your current 3 spd, just more gears to grind. I have an H41 behind a 305 in a '68 and like it, but they are not common in the US.

Chevy SM420 or SM465 are also readily available with the 465 being the later chev 4spd. Both are granny geared. You will need plate adapters for connecting to the tcase, but the bellhousings should be easily available. Be aware that the output shaft will require matching to the tcase input. I have a 465 behind a 350 and like it.

All have roughly the same top gear (no overdrive) and all will probably require some drive shaft modification as they are considerably larger than your 3spd. I would also highly suggest a tcase saver plate and either motor mounts on the bellhousing, or mounts on the backside of the tcase to help support the much heavier 4 spds.

Good Luck.

I agree-this seems like a no-brainer.

SM420 or 10 spline 465 mated to your existing t-case would be relatively easy and cheap. Then you get some very favorable low gears, and the 350 would negate a bit of the wide 3-4 split.

If the truck stays mostly on road, then a Land Cruiser 4 speed would be nice and is a quiet smooth shifting tranny.

X2 on sm465 + stock toy xfer case.

Currently running a 383 to a sm465 mated to a ten spline (3spd) transfer case. Great off road set up. Road manners of the combination leave something to be desired...especially in city/rush hr traffic. 1rst gear is very low, so you end up using 2nd - 4rth (ala 3 spd) on the road. The ratios are a bit far apart.

Best of luck, choose wisely (lol) and be honest with what your actual usage will be.

i have a Muncie 4spd with 3spd Toy TC that ill sell you...it's all complete and ready to install. no adapters needed. they are already together. PM me if you are interersted...even has an overdrive unit too!!

I'm pulling an h42 four speed tranny/ transfer case and driveshafts out of a 74 FJ 40 with a chevy 383 to put in a five speed. The tranny and trnasfer case is working fine right now, but you would probably want to have someone rebuild them/re-seal them while you have them out. I am in Virginia and my trnasmission is being shipped to me in the next week or so. Are you interested in purchasing these?
