Any of you. Have experience just shearing the snap ring inboard portion of your axles?

I went to replace the CV shaft on a friends truck today and the result was the following photos…

And couple more photos

I’m trying to figure out why just the very inner portion of the axle sheared off… I also have a video and clearly the differential is toast as well… But mechanically speaking I’m wondering what happened ... besides the obvious too much application of the skinny pedal.

Just pulled the whole front end apart this morning ...

She drives pretty nice as a 2 wheel drive

Safety note!!! If you have to temporarily convert your 4wd to 2wd make sure to save your CV shaft outer axle stubs... or you will discover that only your brake calipers are keeping your wheels on...

I can only think of one reason. The CV axle was defective or was not installed properly and the c-clip did not secure the knurled shaft properly. The shaft started to slip out until the driving force was applied only to the small section at the end, snapping it off.

If you get all the pieces out, and replace the oil seal, CV and gear oil, the diff may have survived. If the needle bearing is compromised, that can be replaced without pulling the diff.

Looks like an awful lot of water got into that diff....very milky oil that came out of it! Sure didn't help things I'd imagine...

Cheers!
