I think I have a Habit

The 5.3 and the 4L60E have their own individual stand-alone computers and each can be flashed inexpensively for economy, power, shift points, shift firmness, etc. For a newer engine, it's almost plug and play to retrofit them into a different vehicle. Gas pedal linkage, some Toyota sensors in the engine to work with the Toyota gauges, some custom mounts and drive shafts and you're good to go usually. Personally I'd go with the 4L80E instead since the 4L60E is kinda weak in a heavy truck, but otherwise it's a great combination. Of course that's an easy upgrade when the 4l60E goes if it comes to that. I'm looking forward to the progress.

So we searched for two years to find the 80 and poof here is another one. 95 has a rod knock has the majic button. Came with a brand new radiator and an aftermarket TJM font bumper.

That is the one, picked it up in Asheville. Hey Darin, I forgot to tell you that I set aside that exhaust system and fuel lines from the 62 for you. Take your wife to Biltmore and swing down this way on the way home.

I am in Chesnee, SC 45 miles south of Hendersonville. Right down RT 26 to exit 5 in SC then 12 miles across 11. Let me know if you want to come by and when

Heather sat around last night trying to formulate what she wants in the interior. Either two tone leather seats or highlighted piping on the seats. I think I am going to go with a 6.0 in this rig and go with the 4l80e trans. Sonn as the rear bumper I am building on it is done, my FJC is going up for sale. We'll use the proceeds to build the 80 out.

Interesting game changer, I discovered that the knock in the motor is very slight, took the 80 for a cruise and it ran well. The brand new radiator has a 3" crack in the bottom tank though. So now we are considering replacing the radiator and driving it a bit to see how it goes, if well we might just flip it and go to work on the 93 80 we have.

You do have a habit my friend, but as you are well aware, this is one heck of a support group :D

Thanks Darin. Heather contacted the shop that installed the radiator in Hilton Head and they faxed over the receipt for the radiator. I will pull it when I get a chance and exchange it at NAPA.

The guy she spoke with installed the radiator and has been taking care of this 80 for years, old college room mates. He said that it overheated but ran fine when it left his shop. I guess the kid (father's truck) overheated it again between Hilton Head and Asheville.

So I'll put the time into swapping the radiator and see what happens. It is looking like it may well keep running on because we drove it some and it ran well. Considering I sold the bumper already I may have picked up a fair 80 for $500.00 including the majic button.

It seems that the Toyota Gods are smiling on me. I swapped in another new radiator today (free swap from NAPA and no crack) and we have been driving it around all afternoon. It has a very minor knock but the truck runs just fine. SO I think we are going to drive this one for a while. We'll probably look at doing the motor swap on the 93 I bought a little while back.

We have been driving the 80 with no issue. It is easy to see why so many people like the 80 platform. Heather loves it.

^^Quoted myself....which happens, but typically not publicly^^

Beyond a Cruiser guy's wildest dreams.....Heather also wants a 55.

A woman after my own heart.

Final developments in the saga I was telling you about on an LX.

Seems the oil pump seal had been recently replaced, evidenced only by a ticket left in glove box with the OE part number for.

It was still leaking so new owner tasked mechanic to replace along with the PS pump seal and power steering pump (think they rebuilt, but addressed).

Crank bolt has an insane torque setting (well, for my devices) and POs shop must not have achieved.

New seals, PS pump work, proper torque and the previously described "rod knock" is gone.

A $3,500.00 LX went to ~$9,500.00.

This has me thinking about the three on CL locally, all with nomenclature "needs new engine" or "may have internal damage" in the ~$3-4k range being viable.....but I have a big issue with being capable of dealing the product I'm addicted to. Hahahaha.

Sounds like things worked out well for you on the LX Chris, good news indeed. Are you going to sell it, or keep it? ;) I know what the collector in you wants to do.

Ahhh, I am with you now, I am a little slow on the up take.

I am in buy mode as it applies to 80s. I am looking to move my 40 and will be pulling the front axle and drive train out of an 83 mini truck I have and then taking the rest to the scrap yard. That will free up two more slots. I can't bear to part with my 60 though.

Heather has been driving the 80 and tells me that it seems to improve every time she drives it, seems I will never get it back. She is lookinig forward to having a "hot rod 4WD" her words

Had a motor guy take a listen to the motor in th 80 today. He said it is a wrist pin knock and no bad at all. He stated that the motor will more than likely die from something else before the wrist pin kills it. Cool!!!

With luck like this, you need to buy lottery tickets every now and then.
