Having a ‘98 that I wheel a lot out in the desert, an exploded front diff would be bad. Just installed a front ARB locker and the dual compressor for airing up as well. Will be testing tomorrow🍺🍺

nice setup, does the air locker reduce the likelihood of exploding a front diff? i guess that would be the case if most front diffs meet their end because of wheelspin

The lockers give more rigidity to the carrier so there is less flex with the ring pinion and spider gears, apparently.

Yes it does, gets rid of the 2 pinion set-up.

"what's next "
is that you post a how to write up and associated costs, you know for those of us nervously looking at a 98 for the first time ;)
Great looking rig love the color and the pin stripes!

Thanks, can't get away from pinstripes out here wheeling in the desert ! Should have taken more install pics but was just caught up in the project I guess. Will be out of commision for a while, getting shoulder surgery today so maybe I'll write something up.

The triple-locked club! Nice. Can’t wait to join that one. The other option for strengthening the front dif is to replace with 2000-2002 front dif that is 4 pinion but have to make sure it has 4.30 gear ratio. But not locked…makes more sense to lock it up.
I figured I had 4.10, did '98 have 4.30 ? Will jack it up and check, when I installed the locker I checked hoping the gears were marked but alas, they were not.

Had my rotator cuff done a couple of years ago, good luck today. Surgery wasn't bad but the rehab/recovery can feel slow if you are impatient like me. I was enthusiastic when I walked into the physical therapy office until the one guy in the place walked up and introduced himself to me as my PT. I hope you have better luck!

98-2002 got 4.30's - It wasn't until the introduction of the 5spd AT in 2003 that they changed the ratio to 4.10
