Ok....I have an 83 FJ60 with 115K miles....I've had it for about four months....I've had some problems but it usually starts with no problem....but sometimes it acts funny...cold days? no problem...pump the gas three times pull the choke and VROOM!....well this morning for instance...it wasn't that cold....so I pumped the gas twice pulled choke and it turned fast and sounded like it wanted to fire and didn't. So I pumped the gas a little bit more and same....nothing....well I tried and tried to turn my baby on but it wasn't happening....I pulled out the owners manual and tried everything it said. Well finally with the gas pressed and choke pushed in it started firing....then about 5 minutes later it turned on.....what gives? Any ideas?

sounds to me like you just flooded it

New plugs and wires will help here. Mine does the same thing and I have a super ignition system. It also helps to talk nice to the cruiser before starting its' engine...

I swear ....when i was doing my PS pump, i called my cruiser a piece if ****, and when i did finally get the ps pump to funtion, the starter went.
hmmmmm....

You'll figure it out. It's a 20+ year old vehicle and they require some finesse to start. I have at least a dozen techniques depending on the outside temp, whether the engine is warm or cold, whether it is parked in the garage or out, if there is a passenger in the 60 or not, time of day, etc.

My usual technique is this:

Engine cold

I only use the choke if it's below 20 deg F.
With choke out all the way pump 3X, start and immediately push choke back in to 1/3.
If that doesn't work, hold the gas to the floor while cranking.
If that doesn't work within 5 seconds, let it sit for 10 minutes and try again while talking nice to it and patting the dash.

If it is above 20 deg F don't use choke.
Pump gas 5X and start, give it some gas after it starts.
If this fails, repeat.
If it doesn't start after a couple of tries, hold the pedal to the floor and crank it until it starts.

Engine warm

2 pumps and it usually starts, sometimes if it has been sitting for less than an hour after driving I don't pump it at all and it always starts.

Good luck and be patient. If you don't have patience then go buy a pink panty mobile. :)

And the finesse varies from rig-to-rig . . .
example, my rig ( x means slow push almost to floor
Really Cold Morning ( 30s) 3x gas pedel, starts right up, need to wiggle gas pedel for minute or so
Cold to Cool Morning : 2x pedel, starts, wiggle for 15 to 30 sec.
Warm Morning ; 1/2 to 1 x on pedel
Warmed up engine....don't even look at pedel

When I had my stock carb. One pump when warm. Two when cold (0* to 40*) Sometimes up to 30 when a bit nippy (-20* to 0*) Never could solve why you would have to pump it so many times when it was nippy out, so I replaced with a Weber (not as good as stock probably) and now it starts no matter how cold (3 pumps usually unless warm, one)

Starting procedure for my 62 (10 degrees or 110 degrees) = turn key, drive....:flipoff2:
Think you're soo cool with your Fuel Injection don't ya?!

These motors are pretty hard to flood, IMOP

yah mines no peddle when cold. just pull choke and turn key. let choke into halfway immediately.
when warm push peddle to floor maybe a pump or two first. turn key.
mind you this is just in the winter
