Ok, Here is the problem (s).

I have an 85 fj60. I love my beast. Wife thinks I spend to much on it. My National Guard unit was deployed for over a year.
Wife cannot drive a stick shift, so it was not running while I was gone. I have replaced the power steering twice in the 3-1/2 years that I have owned it.

It leaks oil, gear oil, the radiator gets hot, the wireing needs work, the radio has a whine in it on AM stations.

I am so screwed. I have little or no time to make this thing reliable or trust worthy for dropping the mutants off at the baby sitter or the school. I need some one who can help me get this thing up and running cheaply ( this is to keep wife-phoon from blowing into town) I do not have a problem busting knuckles to get it done.

I am at a loss on where to start what to do or who to call for help.

I tried to get a P/S pump from an online place called auto parts warehouse and it was a freaken nightmare. Wife is still reminding me about that one.

Well thanks for letting me vent.

It was so much easier when we were over seas and tell the wrench turners what was wrong and help them fix it.

My wife is giving me grief as a LC owner and it is working my last nerve.

any ideas on who to call or people in the area that can help would be a preciated

If there is anything I can do to help please let me know...I am an average at best wrench turner with a 60 and a factory manual...I have a spare radiator I can make you a deal on and have taken the split case apart more than I should...let me know...
 
replace power steering pump with a re-man'd OEM only!
140 bucks, give or take.

i bought an aftermarker radiator for less than 200, and it was easy to put in.

all cruisers leak...have some sawdust in a can by the garage...

turn off radio....:D

alternative? average new car payments, as reported in recent WSJ, around 400 dollars a month.

buy a set of factory service manuals and get to it. It is pretty straightforward. and we could argue the pros and cons of teaching your wife to drive a stick but it helps me out alot that my fiancee loves driving the 60. If she can't drive it she can't love it. like hammer said, it beats a car payment and it is one of the most dependable and long-lasting vehicles in the world.

We should be living in Big Sur by June/july, I know it is a long hike but I might be able to help out on a rare occasion. When I am not milking the goats.

leave wife - keep cruizer

women = replaceable
land cruisers = irreplaceable

fortunately for me my wife does not visit this site.... but i would find a way to make her love the vehicle... get her invested in it some way and it will pay dividends over the long haul... leave the kids with grand ma and take her out in the wilds with a canoe or something and maybe a tent. you won't need any viagra.

well thank you for the support folks. We now have another problem. the power steering pump started leaking again. Its pissing all over the inside of the engine area. Im at a loss. I can not tell wife last time it took 3 weeks to get the part after getting dicked around by auto parts warehouse. Now its going out again. I spent 500.00 on a retal car waiting for the part. it arrived and was replaced in 2 days now its going out again.

Im begining to think Im not supposed to have a land cruiser

Have you tried to get a hold of Cruiser Dan??? he can get you new...don't know for how much...also check the used parts area since many trucks are getting parted out...I also seem to remember a way to mount a saginaw pump in place of the toyota....I will look tonight...cheap and plentiful...maybe we could make that work....

If you can hold out till mid May, when I graduate, I'll be happy to give a couple of hours... return the Shmep-boys ps pump, go to SOR.com, or MAF, or even better TLC (all in LA area) and get one of theirs (pricey, but right- TLC may even have a used unit to sell until you can afford OEM one) and we'll get it right. sorry about the TLC plug, but as a starving art student, they have always helped me out- with a smile even. until mid May, I am swamped, so let me know....

At the beginning, I hated my cruiser as well. This too shall pass.

Tell her all the repairs are safety related.

She can't really argue with that now, can she?

Oh, and forget new parts, unless they are electrical.
 
Well wife now knows about the Beast and the pissing P/S pump. She is bummed. I tried the "safety issue" didnt work ("You should have never baught the damn thing, and I told you that" yes dear) the only reply.

ok, Im in LA. its friday night and we need the LC for kid shuttle by monday AM. aint life a basket.

so any ideas on what I can do as in replace the pump with another make or model that wont upset anyone and get it here so I can put it in during the 3 year olds birthday party on sunday. yeah wife is reminding me about that too.

I appreciate the support folks, I really do. Im just at the end of my rope on the power steering pump issue.

Rule #1: If it has tits or wheels it WILL give you trouble.

That being said I would not give up on either one.

Rule #2: Cruiser people stick together.

So with rule1 and rule 2 you should be able to make things work.

If you need help just let me know I am in Simi Valley.

WEll boys and girls. I have a fj 60 on life support at a place called ciscos auto:confused: . After I got the pump in it started leaking from the fitting in the rear of the pump. It turns out that there is a second type of fitting for the pump's out line. Just my luck:doh: .

It is a good thing that I had not sent the other pump back to the rat (:flipoff2: fill in the blank:flipoff2: :censor: ) who sent me a pump 3 weeks late.

CALfj60, Thanks for the help:cheers: . it was a nice shock to the wife that cruiser folks actually show up and help. I love proving wife-phoon wrong:o .

SamIAM09,:cheers: thanks for the info about Eds in Glendora, young Ed was a real help on getting the part for me and not charging an arm and a leg. bummer about the fitting:doh: .

I also saw a really tricked out fj in ciscos it was green and real clean. the owner was having some work done on the brakes. I only hope that someday my 60 looks that clean;) .

I was laughing so hard when I read that. :grinpimp:

Same goes down at my house except currently I have 3 LandCruisers.
having to convince her that we need all 3 has been a constant uphill battle which I am slowly losing.
 
Hi Dave,

A few responses here...

Number 1 - First and foremost, thank you for your time in the service.

Number 2 - I agree with srplus on getting the wife involved, it'll take a few camping / trail trips to build the appreciation and probably would help to talk with the wifes of many of the others on here, or the female members of this board at the LC events. Or maybe just one big repair project - the satisfaction of working with you to solve it may help her understand. I'm a new to the cruiser way of life, but getting involved asap is the plan. We (wife and I) did a lot of the work together on an engine replacement and she loves the cruiser now!

Number 3 - AM whine - check e-bay for an aftermarket stereo, I picked up a $10 replacement for my old J**P (I'm a convert to cruisers) :)
