hey
I have a HZJ79 1999 model non turbo trayback with a r151 gearbox,it has lost drive to the rear with only the rear driveshaft vibrating and not turning whilst goeing through the gears.

I have been reading that the early model has the 2 piece transfer input shaft with the sleeve so i take it that the sleeve is mosy likely stripped, vehicle has over 500,000 km,s on the clock. It broke in my driveway on the farm

A few questions i would like to ask

1. Can i remove the transfer case without removing the whole gearbox assembly?

2.Does this problem usually strip the sleeve only or both the gearbox and transfer shafts?

3.If i buy a 1 piece transfer input shaft are they hard to replace ,i am reasonably mechanical minded and have heaps of tools.Obviously replacing bearing and seals as needed.

4. The gearbox would never hold itself on a hill in gear when the engine was off,it would always creep down a hill inch by inch without the handbrake on,forwards or backwards, what causes this ??

This makes me love my HJ47 even more

Any answers would be greatly appreciated, many thanks in advance

The single piece "input" is actually a main shaft for transmission seen in cast iron H55 transmissions. Toyota engineers redesigned the system for a floating shaft for the transfer to relieve stresses to stop the leak between transmission and transfer and maybe also help with the atm /mcnamera solution gear.

at 500,000 klms i would say it is time to find a replacement gearbox/transfer, or maybe replace the shaft and rebuild the tcase. It has had a good life, but the service may be done and it is time for a new system.

ideally every 125,000 to 150,000 miles or 200,000 to 250,000 klms the t case should rebuilt and wear inspected and parts replaced. Waiting too long can cause issues and service life will diminish. The longer in spec, the longer the life.

not familiar with the r151 terminology; presume this is the original box to the hzj79.

if so this box is a pig. plenty of failure stories in my parts, including my own.

i put a box out of an 80 series wagon in. better box and is pretty much a bolt up conversion. have to cut the floor a bit. there is a thread here somewhere a while back called (i think) hzj79 gearbox options.

The gearbox had been rebuilt before sometime and is actually quite good without any symptoms of trouble, how ever the transfer case has always been really hard to get into gear to activate 4 wheel drive and i cant see any sign of fresh gaskets in the transfer case.

So the new updated shaft fits the transfer case right? If so can i get the transfer case out and get rebuilt without removing gearbox.

I looked at the possibility of a 80 series box but most for sale have a full time 4wd transfer case

I am going to sell my 79 and stick with the 75 and 47
