My 1999 HZJ75 came with the factory mounted roof basket. The basket was removed and lost long ago, but the mounting bolts remain. I am trying to figure out if they will be strong enough to mount a roof rack to. From what I can tell, the original was rated to 150lbs. I assume that is the dynamic loading and I do not know if that is based on the mounting method used or the construction of the actual basket and basket frame. I am looking to put a roof top tent on the rack when complete. I’ll need to support about 200lbs dynamic and 600-800 lbs static. My amateur attempt at engineering math says it should be fine but I don’t trust my assumptions. Hopefully someone here has a bit of experience with this.

Thanks for the reply. I have found the factory parts, but I’m looking to build a heavy duty rack. I already have that planned out. My question really is will these mounting points hold a heavier load than what the factory basket can without shearing the roof sheet metal.

Hello,

I am late to the party.

According to the manual, the OEM roof rack load limit is 200 kg or 441 lb. The manual does not say whether it is static or dynamic. It is better to assume it is static.

As is the case with the 70 Series, those roof mounts are beefier than they look. As mentioned above, it would not hurt to add feet to touch the roof.

Is the roof rack you are intending to mount OEM?

Not planning to use any OEM parts other than the mounting points already on the truck. The plan is to use a long ⅛” to ¼” aluminum plate along each side that ties into all 3 mounting points and 5 to 8 1.5”x3” aluminum t-slot extrusions across the middle. If that explanation doesn’t make sense I could draw something up to try and show it.

@JuanJ posted some great specs, but I would not agree with him that the listed rating is static... I would definitely assume it's dynamic as that's usually the more important rating for our purposes ;-)
