Hi Guys,

Anyone have any pics of a frame mounted trainer hitch on an HZJ73? It has to carry a big load so it can't just be one of those rear bumper mounted types.

Regards,

No one got one? Ill post up some pics of mine on the 73 and the75:D
The 75 is overkill

Lois:

My truck does not have its rear bumper, so it's very much like a 40 back there, with the rear frame member hanging out in the open.. I made a 2" receiver where the tube goes under the rear cross member, and it bolts onto the pintle hook mount in the middle of the rear frame member... I'll take a picture and post it up today.. But if I was doing any heavy towing, I'd do something different, and put a universal hitch across to the frame longitudinal members...

BTW, there are Pintle hooks available that have a trailer ball integrated into them. Not sure that it would work the best with the pintle ring, but you aren't likely to use that feature.

Edit:

I googled "pintle ball hitch" and found this in the first hit. Combo Pintle Hook and 2"Ball

It would look cool hanging off of the back of a 'Cruiser....

But the trailer would likely be going uphill all of the time:doh:

I've got a frame-mounted pintle hook mounted to the rear frame member on both of my 7x-series trucks and also one mounted to the back of my 45. Class 5 hardware and it's solid.

With the pintle mounted on the rear member isn't the hitch a little high??
Like how do you keep your trailer level?

It's not high at all--when the trailer you're pulling is an M416 military trailer or the like. There are also receiver-type mounts that bolt to the rear frame member and allow you to use a drop-type tongue; however, that kind of setup is not as strong as the pintle, IMHO.

Thanks Dieseldog.

I too would like to see some pics of trailer hitch setups on an HZJ73/BJ74 - if anyone has any to share.

Thanks!

Peter

HI Peter,

You get your hubs yet? I shold have a set here this week. A very easy install.

I don't have any pics of my towbar setup on hand, but it consists of 2 6mm plates bolted to the outside of the chassis rails, a length of 50x50mm RHS between them under the rear x-member with the 2" receiver fitted in the middle, & another plate going up from the receiver to pick up the 4 bolt holes in the centre of the back of the x-member.

Cheers
Clint
