HZJ/PZJ7X fluid specs (1 Viewer)

Been doing some searching, but I'm having a hard time finding good numbers. A lot of conflict on types and quantity of various fluids. Specifically for the Trans, T-Case, and diffs.

For reference I have 91' PZJ77 w/ r151f trans and k084 axel set (Frame no. PZJ77-0001934)

Transmission: GL4 or GL5 4.9 liters
Transfer Case: GL4 or GL5 2.2 liters
Front Diff: GL5 SAE 80w90 3 liters
Rear Diff: GL5 SAE 80w90 2.5 liters

My questions:

benefits of GL4 or GL5 in the trans and t-case?

why is there more volume in front diff compared to the rear diff considering the rear diff is bigger?

lastly, if I have the option of GL5 in the trans and t-case, is it okay to run the same exact fluid in every mentioned component? it would make life easier buying the stuff by the case and keeping enough on hand in the truck when going wheeling.

Don't over think this.

Get a 5gal bucket of 80w90 and use on diffs, transfer, and transmission.

Call it good.

And these are industrial implements. Any conventional grade of 80w90 will be fine.

I thought the front diff was about 2 litres. Typo maybe.
Some say GL4 is more suitable for the brass coating on the synchros etc
I don't get too fussy about it. I buy enough Castrol 80-90 and call it a day.

So quick search is only showing 80/90 gl5 synth avalible online. Mobil1 has a 75/80 that's readily avalible. Any thoughts on going down on the weight?

Mobil 1 is overkill and a waste of money on a Land Cruiser that is almost 30 years old. Again, do not over think this. These are 100 year old hypoid gear designs.

I am definitely guilty of being an over thinker. Mainly because I have been waiting for my truck for almost 5 months. That leaves a good bit of time to over research just about every aspect of something hahaha.
I acquired the following for the first full fluid change on my HZJ75rv as part of giving it a solid baseline / start of a schedule to go off of with fluids.

Just sharing what I got as an example of probably the most complicated / overthought route to take without going as far as studying charts to compare brands of each. Instead I took recommendations from people who have done those comparisons themselves.

Did you get any whine or clunk running 75/90 gl5 in your diffs? I'm considering running the 75/90 synth over the 80/90 petrol as it's winter

I like shell oils products and mobil1 second. It's not based in science it's just what I prefer. But the shell is $135 +$73 for 20l shipped and mobil1 doesn't make a 80/90

Should have made that more clear.... I am still waiting for my troopy to clear customs so I have no first hand experience of using it yet. But my buddy who recommended it has run 75/90 synthetic in lots of 70 series so Im sure it works great. The only area he recommended spending the extra money on a high quality product is for the LS rear diff. Apparently if you use a fluid it doesnt like it will make the noises / feels to let you know. Id rather avoid that all together so I went for that castrol with LS additive in it.

So just to rehash this. I'm not able to fill to factory specs. Fluid overflows at the fill port. Not much I can do about it. Just geewiz I guess.

Here are amounts recommended for engine oil and coolant. The others (trans, t-case, diffs) you just fill to the top like you are doing if I understand correctly. As usual with me... someone correct me if I am wrong please. I am STILL waiting on my truck. This week hopefully

This is not an issue you should over think but it is one in which you should DEFINITELY follow Toyota's GL4 recommendation for the transmission and transfer case. This article is one of the best explanations of why GL4 vs GL5 in our gearboxes. As owner/enthusiast who are committed to the "best" for our trucks, GL5 is definitely a bad thing to do to your transmission.

I personally use Red Line MT90 every time I change manual transmission fluid, even in the vehicles I'm selling. Probably could use dino oil, its MUCH cheaper but I like how the transmissions shift with MT90. I use Sta-Lube GL4 85w90 in the transfercase.

No, GL5 is specified for the differentials. No brass synchros and the differentials require the EP protection of the GL5.

I toke a leap of faith with using gl5 mobile1 synth in my trans and t-case. I'll get the oil tested and post results after a few thousand miles.

Side note. What type of coolant are people using?

The following may be too obvious, but it is worth doing.

Every once in a while, open the radiator cap and touch the coolant with your finger. Check for oil and scale/deposits on your fingertip. Change the coolant if you have them.

The coolant in the radiator and the overflow bottle should look transparent. Change it if it is not.
