Alright experts,
I hope some can shed some experience or information on my question. I have been through many searches and threads to arrive at this point. I’m new to These engines and modifications and learning still. I hope to not frustrate anyone with my questions!
So, this is about Boost compensators. Specifically, to fit to a 1HZ which will receive a turbo (stolen from a factory turbo HD). I understand the purpose of the boost compensator and I personally feel that this is a high priority item for a turbo install to keep fueling as accurate as possible. So here is a quick summary of my understanding on selection:
22540-17550 – most common listed for 1HZ turbo installs. Hard to find aside from one member (akella) on mud. Shows as used for 90-98 HDJ80(no 81) and 98-2002 HDJ 100.
2254017260 – 2nd most common (though not common), Listed as Boost comp and Hydraulic valve. Shows as applicable for 90-95 HDJ 80 and 81. Seen one for sale used but not many other comments on the web aside from it being a supersede from 22540-73100.
225401C180 – 1HZ with EGR, (also listed for Forklift) but listed as compensator, and boost compensator depending on the catalog. Also, has been recommended on mud, but never followed up with peoples experiences. This part number appears on the newest of models which are still mechanical injection. I believe this is what the Safari turbo install instructions is referring to showing that you swap a vacuum port plug and line to “convert” it to a boost comp rather than just altitude/EGR function.
I understand emissions and region applicability which has a role in why there would be different parts for different regions (including PN that I haven’t listed). Especially with shape of aneroid pin changing based on emissions requirements. So, to try and simply put the information I’m hoping someone has:
Thank you!

- Does anyone know of the differences between 17550 and 17260 which would help on deciding their preferred application? The application in my case would be a 1HZ. Maybe outside of small emissions differences these are actually the same?
- In my head, I’m thinking using something originally designed as a boost compensator would be better than “converting” an altitude compensator into a boost compensator. I swear I saw the pin shape from one of these online and it was very much so different from the boost comp. there are however a few threads (and I think including safari) of people utilizing this as a boost comp. Does anyone have a few cents on knowledge about this?
Thank you!
