I have been wanting a hydrolic front winch for some time, but I have heard that the mile markers are too slow. I get tired of my elec. overheating and having limited pulling time. I have an extra 8274 that I have been contemplating using a p/s pump driven hydrolic motor to run. in which case I would move the electric winch to the back of my 40.

Has anyone done this and if so how does it work?.

I have heard of, but not seen twin motor winches. This would be ideal if I had a way to dissengage the hydrolic and use electric if it failed or vise versa.

I have thought that it might be better to cut the case apart and only use the final gearing of the winch as I believe that the hydrolic motor would be too slow. I will also have to find elec. solenoids to make it work.

also does anyone know the flow rate and pressure of sag pumps?

thanks in advance

I read up on how to do this.
In short it's not worth it.
There is a company in Australia that makes a hydraulic over electric conversion for that winch, but the parts are like $2000aus.

If you need something to do with your spare 8274, let me know. I am looking for a used 8274.... :D

A 12 pack of beer and a comealong is the hydraulic winch I have used most.

Very interested in the make, brand, style of winch you are talking about here, the condition of your electrical system, ie, size of power cables going to winch, type of batteries and condition/years in service, and size of alternator.

Was on the side of Cavenal hill in Poteau OK in the rain, and used my 8274-50 Warn winch almost continuously getting to the top of some of the ridges on the trails there. Five-plus minute continuous hard pulls at a minimum, and it did not get hot once.

Dual red top Optimas, 160A alt, 00 welding cable from the battery to the winch, both positive and ground.

Resistance to current flow creates heat, just as restriction to flow creates heat in a hydraulic system...

Good luck!
