So this is a fairly specific question but thought I would ask in case anyone has experience with these seats. General observations or opinions would be most excellent as well. I know people have had a lot of good experience with junkyard seats but I haven’t found any I like. These are the three aftermarket seats I’m looking at:

Hunsaker Icon (reclinable suspension seat)

Corbeau Baja RS (reclinable suspension seat)

Is there a build quality difference between Hunsaker and Corbeau?

Rambling:
I guess the seat needs to fulfill three duties: off-road on rutted trails, long highway trips, and daily driving. The priorities for the seat’s performance are in that order. Although I will use it to daily drive, I don’t mind putting up with inconveniences as long as my back is happy.

Not that I’m obsessing over seats but since I have significant back problems a seat can mean the difference between a great outdoor adventure and a medicated haze punctuated with stabbing pain (not that I’m being melodramatic about it or anything.) I have fairly specific requirements and issues with seats. I have a long torso and all the seats I have sat in seem to curve right into my upper back where two of my discs give me lots of trouble. I also have wide shoulders so the curved shoulder support so popular is also uncomfortable to me. I can’t tell from the pictures how much the suspension seats curve at the shoulders. I don’t like lumbar support or at least I have never found it useful. The suspension seat sounds the most useful for isolating my back from the constant vibration and jarring of travel over rough trails / roads. However, it seems that suspension seats are mainly used in rock crawling buggies. I have read some favorable reviews about the Corbeau seat for constant use on rough gravel roads. The Procar rally seat looks like it has great side support that can help support my back over rough terrain and it has a straight back, which won’t conflict with my upper back.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to sit in them and have only gone off of pictures and reviews that I have read. If anyone has any other suggestions for seats, that would be great to hear too. Thanks for any help.

Id say you need to Sit in any seat for a bit of time before you buy it.. Do you have any off road shops near you that have seats on display??

I think the Pro Rally seats look Horrible..

What about PRP Seats?? http://www.prpseats.com/home.html

they are Built to order, and you can add height or width to suit! thats what im going with on my truck!

I have the hunsaker non reclining seats and I would take them over any of the other car seats that I have sat in. The only thing for all non oem seats they are going to be taller. So getting in and out of your truck will be a different way.

I have owned my different cars and other than my 66 Mustang seats the hunsaker would come in first.

They are memory foam to boot.

I am 6' and a beer and steak eating 300lbs.

Here is what I have in my 60 and my 40.

They are super comfy for long road trips as well as very secure for the trail. I have the Wide back option. I bought them at Summit Racing and they were around $125 each. I went with the cloth since vinyl gets really hot in the sun.

I'm 6' and 220 and the wife is 5'2 3/4" and 102. She really like them. She just fits deaper in the seats.

The Hunsaker seems like the way to go for larer (cough) framed folkls as myself. BUt the 5 point harness is a bit much for daily driving. Is there an easier more "City friendly" alternative with this seat?

Well, how bout if I wanted to purchase new foam and cover from specter off road? For my Driver seat? Don't know the actual price but it looks like I can get 2 new seats for the price of the foam and cover... Yes-No?
As it is right now, I can't sit in traffic for more than 1.5 hours without my back hurting!!! Soo... I'm looking at improving my seat.

Oh and on a side note..., The wife likes the cruiser (after it got a fresh wash) "looks nice now doesnt it?":D

I'm 6'4" 250lbs and i have the Corbeau non-adjustable back Baja's. They are very comfortable. I've been on hour long rides, and had no discomfort.;)

I'm not going to restore mine to original so i could not see recovering a seat that was designed and built by a little person 20 years ago would make sense. That is why I went to aftermarket seats. The aftermarket seats were cheaper than recovering an original seat..

LOL! Which one? Her 80 or your 60?

Corbeau sport seats in my LWB Samurai. I like them very much.

Are you a big person? That will make a lot of difference in which seat you get.

Someone who is 5'2" / 105lbs may recomend a seat that a 6'2" 220lbs person cannot fit in.

I'm 6' and more or less 200lbs. I just called around some more and found a place where I could sit in the Corbeau Baja SS (non-reclining) and they were a lot more comfortable than I thought they would be. Very comfortable in fact but I could see how the fixed-back could get hard on a long trip.

Good to know about the wide back version of the APC. I'd seen your seats in a previous post but hadn't caught that point. I've looked through Summit Racing on their website and they don't list the APC any more. I guess with the wide back version the shoulder do-hickies won't get in the way.

Any opinion on Hunsaker vs. Corbeau for build quality? Hunsaker are about half the price but you have to buy a pair.

Great website. Nice that there is some variation in the angle of the fixed-back. I'll have to measure my seat now for how it would compare angle-wise.

I just installed the seats from IPOR and love it. Very high back, nice sides and bolt straight to the factory slides.

Just found Family Adventure Outfitters in Vacaville (California). I met Neil & Tara. They were extremely helpful and very nice to talk to. They had five different Corbeaus to try out. Good advice and great service.

I forgot to ask if he is on 'MUD but his fj40 is "General Sherman" from the website.

I waffled between the Baja RS (reclinable) and the Baja Ultra Wide. Finally ordered a Baja RS. Only got one seat. When I can get a second seat I might go with the Ultra Wide (not that I'm ultra wide.... it's just the name.) He recommend the RS over the Ultra because of getting in and out of the land cruiser. He said it might be fine while the cruiser is stock but once it is lifted, it'll be harder to get in and out of the Ultra. The Ultra is deeper sitting than just the Baja SS.

Thanks for everyone's help here. Glad I asked the question.

Looked at the Corbeau's...had the credit card out for the GTS-II. Great lateral support but a bit concerned about how well the cloth would wear. Also, getting in and out of a high bolster seat is pain and the bolster turns to s*** in no time!

Friend has a new set of the Corbeau Sport Seats in his 40. Vinyl looks like it will wear well, but a bit lacking in lumbar and lateral support...and you kinda ride on them.

Finally stumbled across a set of late model Celica GT seats in leather. $250 a pair. Just completed a 4000mi. trip in Baja and loved'em!
