How to remove rear tail lights from tailgate?

Remove the carpet panel on tailgate, then inside there are some nuts holding the housings in place. Yes, easy.

very easy. Be gentle as backing to the carpet will probably tear as you remove it, plus the foam around the lights will also probably tear. You dont need to remove the lights to change a bulb however, just take off the two coverplates that are held on by 3 screws.

Remove lights from tailgate?

Has anyone removed the rear lights from the tailgate and installed filler plates? I like the look of the older style taillights (FJ80s) that don't have lights on the tailgate. There was an older thread that discussed this but wanted to see if anyone actually accomplished this. Thanks.

Why get rid of two brake lights? I don't know about you but I like to make sure people can see me stopping.

Might want to totally replace the tail gate then

A cheap and effective safety redundancy. I'm surprised more vehicles don't have it.

and interestingly, IIRC, it may also remove / delay the issue of the locked up trans shifter when brake bulbs blow.

Do the lights in the tailgate actually get brighter when you step on the brake on the LX? On my 100 they come on with the lights, but they don't get brighter with braking. The upper hatch light does.

CrusrDug, you have the 06. On the 06/07s with the LED brake lights only the outer come on when braking. They're LED, less chance of them blowing out, not to mention a lot brighter. Two great reasons to not need the extra inboards, at least from Toyotas point of view. Personally I'd like as many brake lights as possible without looking ridiculous.

On the older X5s(not sure if it pertains to the current generation) during emergency braking(hard braking sensed via accelerometers) a second pair of brake lights illuminate, both as a backup just incase the others happen to be out and for extra visibility...not to mention hopefully catch the eye of the idiot texting behind you.
