I need to replace airbags and some seat belts in my 08. I'm wondering if anyone has advice for taking down the headliner? Obviously I'll be taking trim panels off the pillars and around doors to access the seat belts, and I have a proper trim remover tool kit, but I have a feeling I'm going to run into some quirky surprises or hidden clips/adhesives in the headliner. Any experience here? I should probably pick up a Chilton manual. Thanks!

There is a nasty black sticky goo at the back hatch.
Check out some of the 2016+ lx570 rack rail removal threads, it requires the headliner to come down.

I knew it! I've done enough of this kinda stuff, I could just sense it! 😂

I miiiiiight be able to get away with removing/replacing the airbags without detaching the entire liner all the way to the back (maybe?) I'm thinking/hoping I can just bend it down enough to access all the bolts I need to get to for the job without having to tackle the schmoo.

BTW, you have the perfect screen name to be spending Christmas night on this forum ;)

Anyway, thanks for the heads up! I'll check out those threads.

If it’s anything like my 2010 LX, which I believe other than the finish it is, it’s a heck of a job. I am finishing up my headliner refinish as we speak. You WILL need a friend to help remove the headliner from the truck to prevent creasing/bending near the back of the sunroof.

On mine there is nothing but clips and velcro patches, no goo/glue.

1 - remove 3rd row
2 - remove lift gate plastic trim that folds up/down
3 - remove trim at bottom of front/second row door sills
4 - remove rear quarter panel lower plastic
5 - remove B pillar lower plastic trim
6 - disconnect power lift gate arm if removing trim, keep if you are just disconnecting panels
7 - remove all pillar trim. For B/C, pry at the bottom then at the top. The tops actually slide into 2 metal guides at the top that you must slide them off after popping the clips out
8 - remove A pillars. Multiple connectors at the bottom, and a thin piece that guides it in. There is thick foam at the bottom which makes it tough to remove. If removing headliner, disconnect the washer fluid line and the connectors from the frame
9 - Remove D pillars - all clips holding them, but be careful how you pry them over the 3rd row locking connector as they get stuck. Disconnect 2 connectors near headliner which seem to run from headliner. Disconnect washer fluid line on driver side
10 - remove sun visors and the sun visor clips. Twist and pull center out then declip the base
11 - remove lights for 3rd row, it has 2 covers that reveal opposing tabs you slide to remove.
12 - remove 3rd row seatbelt in ceiling. It pops down on the side away from the lift gate then pull down
13 - remove grab handles. Pry cover off and declip
14 - remove sun glass holder and declip every connector you see
15 - remove rear view mirror/wiper sensor if you have it plastic covers and disconnect connectors
16 - lay second row flat, consider laying front seats down a ways as well
I think that’s everything other than air vents removed so now it’s time to drop headliner. 2 clips near rear lift gate, push clips above doors, Velcro around sun roof. Pull slowly and massage it out.

I’m on my phone so apologies if I forgot something. Let me know if you need pics before I put the rest of it together today!

OH wow, this is a huge help! Thank you! And yeah I'd love some pics of anything you think might be useful! I'm going to be doing a little video series on this whole project to hopefully help 200 series folks in the future! But yes, pics would be great! Thank you!

So here’s a picture of the removal. 3rd row is out, all pillars out as well as grab handles.

I’m kicking myself as the biggest thing I forgot are the panels above the rear windows. You have to cut the trim clips to remove (90950-08004)

No way to remove them otherwise. Once they are cut use a trim remove above to slide north/south (towards front or back of vehicle) and they will pop out. Order in advance as I was told Toyota would only sell you 2 at a time. I am waiting on my final 2....

one ready to install:

Here’s the A pillar. It slides in and out of a slot next to the connectors. Pry up and away from the pillar, and gently push near the speaker grill on the dash to get it in and out:

Here are the tabs that the B/C are held on by:

And top of the trim:

And a gratuitous shot of sweet sweet suede on the way back from the trim shop to install. Note that the air vents come OUT with the headliner and are installed BEFORE you install it again!

Let me know if you need anything else!

Sweet install on the suede, but it's not necessary to cut those clips ( (90950-08004 )
You can twist the male end of the clip to fit through the hole instead of cutting them out.

Well I have just come to the conclusion that I would never attempt this myself LOL.
I for one have wondered what's hidden behind the headlliner and all the trim.
Would you be willing to post more photos of what's above the headliner and behind those side panels?

Man hat tip if you were able to make that worktried but couldn’t get the right leverage with my panel tool.

As usual I took crap pics but I’ll upload some more when I get back - I’ll see what I can find on the headliner - there’s a lot there. The amazing thing is how thick all the plastic on this thing is. You couldn’t look at a piece of trim only old 4runner without it snapping. This stuff is beef.

welp...i just broke my front passenger roof rack mount on my lc 200....looks like in in for some major cussing. thank you for the info. wish me luck.

note: read the forums BEFORE you try a project.

Getting ready to pull my headliner and found this thread which is very helpful. I have also searched the FSM but failed to find anything really useful as far as a procedure to remove the headliner. Seems odd and maybe it’s my search technique. I have made a large searchable PDF of the FSM. Can anyone point me to any FSM reference for head liner removal?

Here you go. They call the headliner 'Trim Roof Headlining' . I found it searching for antenna, as I knew there was an antenna in the roof.

For those playing along in their own FSM, it's the 200 2013 manual, Body interior, page 572. The install section is before this section, so scroll up for that.

I currently have the headliner out of my 200 (pre-facelift). Toyota doesn't sell the little plastic tabs that grab onto the metal clips on one side and the door frame on the other. I actually made a silicone mold to cast these things myself. If anyone ever needs them, hit me up, I should still have the mold around and I can fire a few off for ya. Otherwise, a new headliner is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. If anyone needs pics or video of the roof w/ headliner remove, let me know. Might take some anyway just for the hell of it.

Thanks for this. I tried "head" and "liner" but still couldn't find it.

Pics would be great. Always good to have seen and know what is there before you take stuff apart. I'm always worried I'll break some plastic clip thing. A pic of the clip you are talking about would be great too.
