I am a little confused on what is the best approach to improve gas milage. I bought my 60 last fall, had it to an emissions guy so as to meet Washington State requirements. The cat is burned out of it. Would this have an effect on its milage. I was reading on here about having the carb rebuilt. I would like to know where to start and what to work on first. It seems to get 10mpg all the time, and 14 sounds a whole lot better. Thanks

Ummm... buy a kia. :D

But seriously, Jim C rebuild, and check your tire pressure - if you're looking for mileage, you want 'em firm. Also, go easy on the skinny pedal, and coast a LOT. :D Our 6,000 lb. rigs will coast for DAYS on a flat surface. That's how I get 17mpg!

Use the KISS principle

Start with the 'easy' stuff - although, in the end, you should probably get your carb re-built and replace the exhaust.

First:
Check your vac lines coming in, out and around the carb and emissions stuff, replace any/all of them. Also check for intake/exhaust leaks - they can rob you of MPG.

then:
Do a complete Tune-up (clean carb, replace plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, PCV, adjust timing, valves, change oil, etc)

When you're ready to start spending more money....
Get the carb re-built (JimC or Mark A. are the only guys I'd trust with my carbs..Just sent one to JimC this week.) Then, replace your exhaust with a hi-flo setup and 2.5"pipe. I chose Magnaflow, but do your homework on what's best for you.

I'm getting about 14-15mpg with a new exhaust but without a re-built carb and that should change soon. :-) ...but the rest of my motor/driveline are nicely in tune, totally stock, and leak-free (knocking on wood).

2x.

I am running 31's on my 1987 which is stock. Keep it in the sweet
55-60mph @3000rpm and it gets 18.2mph freeway

I don't have any leaks at this time (knock on wood). Should I buy factory wires, cap and rotor or is their a better choice?

No matter how much I 'nurse' the speed, can never do better than 11mpg-and gas here is (today) $3.41 per:bang:...but then not a whole lot of roadway to drive here in Juneau AK!

Lol. I just want to believe that it could be better. Does the cat have anything to do with mileage. Should I get that replace right away?

Yeah and get one of those "tornado" metal air swirler thingys to put in your intake. NOT!

Dont replace the cat just gut it and weld back together. That alone will get you 10-15hp and better mileage to boot. If you have to have a cat for emmision reasons buy an extra and put it on prior to getting tested. The cats have bolt on flanges you know.

Dang! We left $3.41/gal behind months ago. We're up to $3.76 here now. On the northcoast of Cali there is one supplier with a monopoly on fuel and seems we always pay 15 to 20 cents higher than most of the state:bang: :crybaby:.
