I need some advice, and yes I've searched and lots of pages came up. I had a mechanic take my 85 fj60 for a spin to give me some suspension advice. The first thing he said was something is wrong with my engine. He knows that 60's are slow and underpowered, but he was sure I should have more power and acceleration. He thought maybe something was clogged. He has another customer with a 60 on stock tires, and he says that car drives at least twice as good as mine. So..just how slow are these things supposed to be. Mine doesn't have any acceleration, and what little acceleration exists stops after about 1500 RPMs. On ramps and hills are obviously a nightmare. I'm constantly worried about pulling out in front of people because of the lack of acceleration I have, is that normal for everyone else? He reccomended that with my current engine state I shouldn't think about about a lift b/c with 33's I would be shocked with the performance, power, acceleration.

i have no prob diagnoses but, mine is deffinately not that slow. i can pass people and even go fast enough that on the occasion i even worry about getting a ticket. good luck and find a better mechanic cause somethings clogged is a pretty dense not to mention vague problem to fix.

What happens after 1500 RPM?

after 1500 RPMS, the RPMS rise very slowly and little to no acceleration. I'm definitely not worried about getting a ticket or trying to pass people.

I had that problem with my cruiser, and it turns out that I had blown the head gasket when my truck over heated. It would go quickly to 1500 RPMs or so, but sputter out and eventually die after that.

That's not what this is. It's like it just won't open up all the way, like something's holding it back.

Have you checked the ignition timing?

Mine is definitly slow but it revs if you ask nicely. Seriously you should be able to pull out in traffic. What is the Preventive Maint history like?

Sounds like the secondary in the carb is not opening.

Start with the basics-do a tune up, set the valves, the timing, change the spark plugs, fuel filter etc. If that doesn't change things, do a compression test. If that's normal, get the carb rebuilt.

Tun up and a good going throgh. Many trucks run the 2F with a lift and even larger tires. Didn't feel bad theday I drove it. Has it changed since then?

The mechanic also thought the secondary might be the problem, or a blocked fuel/air filter. I'm not sure if it's changed since you drove it Randy...maybe gradually so I didn't notice it much, but it definitely feels slower, and I don't remember pulling into traffic always being a problem.
