what is the verdict on servicing yourself vs taking it to an AC shop? Done most of the standard MUD mods and repairs - except head gasket :)
not sure where this ranks for someone who has never tackled it....

OK, apparently swimming upstream here, but...

Losing charge every three years is a pretty darn slow leak, similar to an engine oil "weep" that leaves no noticeable drops/puddles under the vehicle.

Buy a can of r134 for ~$10 and charge it up (read up here how to do so safely and effectively) and you'll likely be good for another three years.

thanks for the advice Curtis... if one wanted to evacuate the system how would that be done? also do you need to change the dryer after evacuating and replacing o rings?

Yes; whenever the system's been exposed to the atmosphere.

Basically, with an undercharged system you either 1) Top it off, or 2) Go "all in".
