i am in new jersey, and even though the local dealer i ordered my FJ from had several on the lot, none met my needs.
my question: for those who did not buy off the lot, how long did it take for the dealer to find you a vehicle, and be able to provide you with a VIN#?
seems to me that the two weeks since the dealer took my deposit, they should be able to at least id a vehicle for me, even if it is going to take four months to get, right?

The vin nuber is not assigned to the vehicle until it rolls off the assembly line in Japan. Once it is made the vin is assigned. If the dealer is locating a veh. that is shipped then the vin is complete and a purchase agreement can be completed.

It gets a temp VIN until it's at port. Then options are installed and it's loaded on the truck to your dealer. At that point, it gets the final VIN.

I placed my order on April 23. My dealer called me on July 9 that it was at port. Worst case, it'll be 2 weeks until it gets to the dealer.

Most dealers won't give you status. You have to nag them constantly and most of the time you won't get a call back. Seems like a pretty consistent way the dealer handles customers, from what I've seen on several board discussions.

My dealer has been great in Killeen, Texas. They are extremely nice and give me updates when I ask for them. My FJ should get to the port on Monday and they said to come in on Monday afternoon or Tuesday to get the VIN and get all my paperwork finished. YEAH!!!

They were even awesome when I went in to change some of the options. I ended up saving money and they were very cooperative while they were doing it. The deal isn't finished yet, but if everything continues like it is I would buy from them again and recommend them to others.

Good to hear. You're one of the lucky few w/ that experience. Sad, because we might buy another toyota and my current dealer won't see any return business.

I was going to buy from Toyota in Killeen in April but they did not seem to take me seriously. Maybe I was not dressed for the occasion. I drove buy and saw a FJC on display. I told the salesman I wanted to buy that vehicle immediately. He told me it was not for sale because it had already been sold to the finance manger who was on his vacation. So I asked the details on ordering one. Could not get a straight answer. So I called Red McCombs in San Antonio. I got no BS answers from them and purchased a vehicle from them with in a few days. They stayed open late so I could drive down from Fort Hood and purchase the vehicle the day they called me. About 2 months after I purchased from Red McCombs, Toyota of Killeen called me asking if I was still interested.

Actualy the full VIN # is assigned when it is put on the ship.
How do I know?
I have the screen printout for my rig with the full VIN # and the vessel # the rig is on.

The printout even shows that my rig will land in port this coming Saturday.

I should have my FJ by next Friday.

I think it probably depends on the salesperson. I guess I lucked up on the one I got, OR perhaps it was because I was wearing a spaghetti strap sun dress. hahahaha Anyway, I paid them back for you. I took a month to make my decision and kept going back and asking them questions. THEN I changed my mind twice before I ordered and once after I ordered! (:

What color is your FJ? Are you still at Hood? I will wave if I see you around!!

I was wearing Jeans, Dirty T-shirt and boots. But thanks for the tip. I am going to buy a Dress today. A very low cut one.
I am not at Fort Hood right now. I am Fort Belvoir, VA doing some training. My FJ is there though. My wife is driving it. Its Black Diamond. It is on post often. After I get done her at Belvoir I am off to Germany. And you bet your arse the FJC is going to Deutschland with me.
Make sure you give my wife and FJC a big wave, and maybe a hug, if you see them.

You should post that picture of you in a low cut dress, assuming your a guy that would be hilarious...

I think I have seen her. Tell her in a couple of weeks to wave at the VooDoo Blue! Have fun in Germany, lived there for 4 years. Be careful of the walled cities. Lost a few side mirrors that way!!

finally, an answer!

Got a call today, from the dealer. They said they have exhausted the search for a vehicle to meet my requirements, so they will order it from the factory. The explained that this is NOT A SPECIAL order, but simply putting in a "claim" for the next one that comes off the line, like i want.
said it should be about two weeks before i get a good idea of when i can expect delivery, and may be up to two months later, that the truck actually is here.
Though i would like to have it sooner, at least they are keeping me informed.
cant tell me which of the two colors, cherry or blue, but the first one off is mine!
