I need to replace my worn birfs, and need to take off my ABS ring for use on the new ones. I know wacking away with a steel hammer is NOT the right way. Do I use wood or a brass bar or do I need a press?

Thanx for your help

I would go with a press.
Dont think you want to break those rings.
You may get burned on new ones.
Most Toyota parts come in solid gold boxes with diamond handles.

Using a press to remove them would be interesting  ...think you'll see once it's in your hands. FWIW, I've used a brass drift and they came off rather easily. I've seen wood used as well but it was a high quality hardwood (Brazian I believe). A press could work well to put them on but the drift/wood works there too.

Any shop with a press will have the right dies to do the job right. Bring the new birfs with you, have them pressed on, and you won't have any worries about that part of an already arduous job.
