There is a grumble in my getalong.

How can I best deal with the differential? Does anybody have a good used unit (and KNOW it's good) ?

Should I tackle fixing the thing myself? They say the 2x4 diffs are posi?

There's no hurry. I most likely won't do this before the weather gets better. She made a 1,150 mile trip up here from Florida so she's not about to go out, or anything like that.

How do you know its your diff? What has led you to that conclusion

As I examined the vehicle prior to buying it I heard this noise. It was more pronounced, then. Put it on a lift and checked the dif. It was about 2 inches low. Replaced all the fluid. (The stuff that came out was brand new.) That quieted it.

My 4runner has a dif problem, as well. It is worse - much worse. It is so severe it causes the driveshaft to vibrate a little. You can tell it is caused by the pinion bearing.

This sound is coming from the pinion / ring gear matchup. It is as if the rear end was not set up properly - WAY out of spec, as to lash.

I suppose it is possible that a wheel bearing is making the noise. However, the frequency of the sound indicates the dif. i.e. the pulses of the gear mesh are far faster than the axles rotate.

Jacked it up today (still "welcoming" this truck). My stethoscope heard nothing at both ends of the third member. The center was not nearly what it is when weight is on the axles but enough to know it's the dif.
