My horn isn't working and I have inspection coming up. I know I can just wire a switch, but I traced it down to the spring loaded brass pin that makes contact with the back of the steering wheel being too worn down to make contact. Does anyone sell this pin? Or does anyone know of another fix?

Post this in the Wanted Parts section or visit your local junk yard. Toyota may also sell just the assembly you need.

Yes, still avail from Toyota. One fix I've read about is using a .22 cal brass shell over the worn end. Use di-electric grease. Supposed to work. Although the thing is only around $10, as stated.

Part # 84312-20011 Called a 'Plate' is the spring-pin.

45176-20030 is the "Ring Contact" that it slides against.

Cool, thanks! Might try thr .22 shell first, got some rolling around the 60 anyway..

A Toyota parts guy turned me on to this fix. Like you, I just looked under the seat, found a casing, put some di-electric grease on it and its been working for years. It seems the .22 casing is more durable than the original pin.

toyota doesn't keep it in stock but they can order it for you, takes 3-4 days and no charge for shipping. you can get from cdan too but with him you have to pay for shipping which doesn't make sense on a $10 part.

Have to LOVE some Toyota dealers - I was quoted $700 to fix the horn about two years ago. I now have a whole steering column - free and the knowledge of the 22 shell. Thanks Bob

I took the ring out and stuck some small washers under the three screws so that it stood out a little bit farther. Free for me, just searched the tool box.

Bought the spring recently from the local Toyota dealer, removed aftermarket wood wheel and put the stock steering wheel back on. Horn works great now, intermittently before. I also prefer the feel of the bigger wheel.

An empty .22 shell cut down to fit works like a charm. Costs about $.05 and gives you a legitimate reason to go the the range.

From exerience buff any high spots off the back of the shell or you will here it scrape when you turn the wheel for the first 1000 miles or so.

Thanks for posting the part numbers...
I went to the local stealership and they quoted me over $30+taxes and shipping.:eek::eek:

I got the same parts at toyoparts for $13.86 +taxes & shipping...;)

Im sure somewhere I can get them cheaper but :rolleyes::rolleyes: too lazy to shop around..

Another $0 fix that I did on the pickup: Just take the cover off and put a big glob of solder on the end of the existing worn pin. The solder will make contact with the ring and the horn will work fine, but it only lasts about a year before it falls off or wears down again, so be prepared to do it every once in a while :o

That's what I did a few years ago. AFAIK [sold the rig] it's still working.

There used to be a company that sold a cap that went over the pin like a 22 shell that has a clip you put on the bottom to keep it on. My local Toyota dealer had 1 left and it cost 8 bucks. Worked like a champ. The guy I delt with wad old and had been with Toyota for years so if you go to yours and theses a young punk working he probably won't know what your talking about.

Ten years ago I took a short section of solid copper 12g wire (romex) and made a tiny ring and put it inside the cap...10 minutes, zero dollars works well. Had I been clever enough I would have used a .22 shell.
