The windows are too small and more will be added. Heres a pic of the front

Large sliding doors front and back. I would like to keep the look but it might get framed in behind side view

Ya, the glass was painted over on the inside, and chicken wire must have been used as safety glass back in the day.

Don't use dark vinyl windows, you will get a lot more expansion out of them.
Unless you keep it wood, the character will be lost. And that means dollars when you sell.
If you are putting in larger windows, going with a wider trim means you may be able to just cut the existing siding to fit and not have to remove it all. I am doing that with my aluminum siding house. I cannot get matching panels and not ready to reside. The wider trim actually makes the house look more period so it was a win, win.
What material you use depends on your climate. While metal siding may be a bad idea in the humid southeast, a dry western state is a different story. A lot of metal panels are reflective enough that they cut down on solar heat gains.

I do this for a living, go with the Hardi, vinyl is crap, strip off the wood, peel & stick openings install new windows/doors, wrap house with moisture barrier, peel & stick all door and window perimeters, trim out all door & window with AZEK PVC trim, install 12" flashing around base of house, preSTAIN all hardi, I say stain, because it lasts longer than paint,2 coats. Install Hardi,as you cut it, knock off all "fuzz" on butt joints, when done use NP-1 caulk on joints and door/window seams.Touch up where needed..you'll never have to revisit your exterior again. oh, and use correct nails, don't skimp, siding install is only as good as how its fastened.

All good ideas.... I didnt use NP1 and have no good reason why. I am familiar with it and it is a good product although pricey and a pain in the ass to use when cool. Or even hot for that matter. But better than doing it twice, right?

and that roof would look good in a standing seam/ blue or green....

Before vinyl siding is installed the sheathing should be wrapped with Tyvek (house wrap) which is waterproof/windproof. Tape all seams and wrap all window/door rough openings.

I avoided cement siding due to conflicting evidence regarding this stuff and composition. Also was some Internet traffic regarding lawsuits etc.. On the recommendation of my supplier (who sold everything available in Canada and had no particular axe to grind either way) .. I went with a high wind resistant vinyl. So far so good. The house was wrapped in Typar first as is SOP around here. As for windows I purchased "Fiberglass" from Inline. NOT Vinyl because the building sits right on the east shore of Lake Superior. Homeowners up and down the shoreline have tried pretty much every make of window (and had numerous warranty replacements) to protect against heavy blown rain, snow and cold drafts...so far the Inlines have been better than any others I know of fwiw.

I do know of a acquaintance with Hardie board that has stood up fine though so any negatives I am aware of are all "third party"

Nicely done!
What window brand / material type did you choose? I like the single hung look.
Cheers,
Mike
