My compressor on my home A/C is on its way out, not sure how much time I have left until it dies all together.

I'm looking for some reputable contacts - folks I can trust - to get me some quotes on a new compressor or maybe a whole new unit (mine is 5 ton, 12.6 SEER Lennox).

Please let me know if you know someone who's in the biz...

Compressor's making a lot of noise (and no, it's not the condenser fan). Sounds like a mix between shot bearings and the gurgling noise an A/C vacuum pump makes if you've ever heard that. Much louder than normal - I noticed it today when I walked out on the street in front of my house and thought "Oh crap, I hope that's not my unit making that noise!"

Called DelAir out (since they're at least reasonable on a weekend rate) and he verified the capacitors were still OK, and nothing else seemed out of line. He did not put gauges on it to test for R-12 (or whatever they use in these units).

The unit was installed 12/2004, so the lifespan is about right... I certainly don't want to spend the $$$ on it, but it seems prudent to be planning the compressors funeral at this point!

I've heard it's about the same price to replace the whole unit as only the compressor. Likely due to labor. Consider craiglists if you want save money, there's good deals our there. I replaced my whole system last summer from units from Craigslist.

I use Ambrose Air in Orlando. They are a family run business. The owners go to my church and are good people. My house was built in 2001 and I am being told that if the compressor goes I should bite the bullet and replace everything. Newer units are much more efficient. I have heard quotes from 10-15K and there might be some tax breaks thrown in.

Carter I will talk with a friend on mine in the biz. He replaced my whole system for damn near half of what most companies were saying it would cost me. You have seen my place. Not too big in size. We went with a half ton larger than what the companies all said I needed and my electric bill is now damn near half of what it used to be. He has been in the HVAC biz for at least 25 years that I know of. I will let you know what he says. Soooooooooooooooooooooo far away and all.

I'll let you know.

another option.. we use Cee Bee a/c service and they are top notch. they found a prob other a/c people missed and now i use them for preventive. ave price, good service.

Thanks for the responses so far - appreciated!

I've got a few good leads out of these and have at least called every company suggested to get a good feel for the range of suggestions that'll come out of this... what a wide range of spending, however - you've got the $1200 patch job all the way up to $9500 so far... wowzer.

Another question - for those of you who have had a system replaced - say with some of the two-stage setups - have you really seen a reduction in your power use? I'm hearing conflicting stories on that, too!

I've done a few things!

First thing I did was get all the measurements to do a manual J on the house. For those that don't know, this is how you determine the size of the unit based on the orientation of your house, the materials used to build it, where your windows are, how big they are, and how many pieces of squirrel poop you have on the roof.

So while that's being worked up I've raked a number of folks over the coals trying to figure out the deals. I think I'm going to end up with a Goodman unit. For about half the cost of the Trane / Carrier systems, it's got a better warranty on it and I don't hear anyone complaining about them.

I'm probably going to end up pulling the trigger on this later this week. My compressor has gotten louder over the last few days. You can now clearly hear the annoying sound reflecting off all the other homes on the street. It's a good thing my neighbors' kid is hearing impaired since his room is right outside of my condenser unit!!!

I had a Goodman unit installed 5 years ago and have had zero problems as of yet . I want to say it cost me 2700.00 total install .

Are you replacing the whole system? Compressor, A-Frame and blower? I have had two people tell me if the compressor or motor goes it is time to replace the whole unit because of energy efficiency. Mine is 13 years old.

Yeah, the whole system is getting changed out.

I had quotes in the $11-13k range for a 5 ton carrier/trane system. My father in law just got a new top-of-the-line trane system and he's quite unhappy with it. The thermostat gives him fits all the time, and the unit might not even be programmed correctly because it never seems to be keeping up. I've also found out a lot about these companies that I never cared to know before - like who own who, and all that jazz.

My options were to 1) replace the compressor, for about $1500-$2000. This would have gotten me a year warranty, and kept the same (degraded) efficiency. Since my current system was a 13 SEER when I got it new, it's now probably down around 11 (you can figure you loose a SEER every 3-5 years).

2) I could replace the outside condenser & compressor unit, and I might have been able to convince someone to do it - but by the time I was done, I'd be around $2500-$3000. They don't like to do that because of coil matching. Of course, you can match the inside coil with a new system (higher efficiency), but now you're building a Frankenstein. Probably not a good idea.

3) Replace the whole system - getting a new condenser and evaporator (both outside and inside units). For my setup, since I have natural gas, I can only get a 18 SEER max unit, but that's quite expensive. So I went with a 15.5.

Out the door price for me for the whole new system is right around $5900. Not exactly what I was looking to spend my money on, but it's a two-speed, two-stage setup so it'll save money and keep the house even more comfortable. But at half the cost of a carrier system... well, that's just crazy talk.

Yep , I had the same problem with quotes . First one gave me one at 12k and wanted to put controls in each room ( I said it's time for you to leave ) . Next one gave me a quote of 6500 - 8000 and did that over the phone ( I was very impressed ) . Third guy was just plain stupid . The fourth and final one was a beer dranker came out said he could do it for 3700 . After a couple of hour of dranking beer and b.s.ing he was down to 2700 . So find a thirsty HVAC guy and you'll get it for his cost .

I did mine myself last summer for about 800 total. $600 for a used unit from Craigslist and $200 for misc tools that I didn't have. PITA, but worth it in the long run.

BEER! Way better than bitcoins...

Great information for when the inevitable happens. Thanks for documenting it all.
