So, I'm draining the gear oil from the transfer case and notice what looks like some sort of oil leak. The gear oil from the transfer case looks like engine oil, very brown and dirty and didn't seem like much oil drained out.

I'm looking around and find this little hole in the back of the transmission where the transfer case bolts on.

Is this supposed to be there or is it a failure in the casting? I found some posts where there is a small hole in the transmission, but this just doesn’t look right.

anyone mind looking under their truck with a flashlight and letting me know if this hole is oem.

leaving on holiday thursday up north of hetch hetchy and need to determine if this is an issue.

anyone???

It is OEM, it lets you know if either your tranny output shaft or your transfer case input seal is leaking...

I have NEW seals from CDan/Onur for mine and the other Landcruisers in my sig. Surprisingly although the leak looks bad it is a relatively tiny bit of oil seeping out, or at least in my case. (pun intended) A few thousand miles later it started dripping, once a month I top it off though.

Normal.

Just verified on both of my 80's.

Had a heck of a time figuring out where/what exactly you were looking at though.

thanks guys. so it looks a seal on transfer case is gone. the gear oil was brown and very low, as not much drained out.

can i do a 1,500-mile trip as-is or should i fix before i leave?

Sc0- when you top off, how much oil are you adding?

When you say not much came out, how much are you talking? The t-case only holds about 2 litres. (1.7 on my older non VC t-case, might be a bit more with the VC...)

I drained into the pan I used for the reaf diff, so I wasn't able to measure. It was just a visual observation. Maybe just seemed low because I drained rear first and its capacity is greater than transfer case. I was very dirty though, which was a little odd. I don't have any oil under the truck where it's normally parked, which is a good thing?
