Anybody use a sling and hoist to get the FRP top off their 70 series?
I've really enjoyed driving around without the roof the past few days and I was thinking it would be great if I could just take the top off by myself with my chain hoist.

Maybe sling through the rear windows or will that destroy the window frames?

If it's light then you'll be fine. If not get a long piece of wood (2x4 or something similar size) and lift of the ends of that with a sling (put rags or foam between the wood and the window frames). Have lifted truck cabs off like that no problems.

I would use two slings with hard foam blocks for packing on removal to be safe rather then sorry. I would run these along both sides and then onto the hook if that makes any sense.
The only problem I see is storage in the summer months as my garage is chocka block full even after a few years of selling .... I mean good collectable stuff. :)

I have no garage space either. The lift point would be on an I-beam that someone clever ran right through the old barn: it sticks out the front about 3 meters. I'd have to make a landing pad and just lower it to the ground.
I was thinking of making something like what's in the picture below, pad it. unbolt one side to put through the opened sliding rear windows, re-attach the 4th side, then put the ends of the slings on the corners.

Two can lift it. A bit harder to maneuver over the full-size read doors + big spare tire.
Harder still to put it back without finger pinch or loss.

Lol yeah I can imagine. You'll probably be fine running a couple of slings through the front and back. It's fibreglass so it'll have a little bit of give before it gets damaged. Just stop if it starts creaking heaps :p

I used this, or something very similar to store the hardtop of my bronco in the garage. Ran a 2 x 4 with two Eye-hooks on the front portion of the top and then another one right under the back. Worked well and the bronco top was a good bit heavier than the FRP top. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000K12EA8/?tag=ihco-20

Very cool. Looks tons faster than my engine hoist/chain fall.
