How can it have an Oregon title and plates if it is illegal?

I imported a 1985 BJ70 from Canada went thru the procees myself, Oregon won't issue title or plates unless the paperwork is done.

You imported a Canadian spec model with a 17 digit vin. This is a jap spec rhd model. Must be 25 years old to be legally registered. It falls under completely different rules.

I repeat, I went today and looked at the rig he has a title from Oregon that matches the rig, so again how did he do it, and yes I asked him all he would say was it cost him alot?

is it actually titled as an HJ61? or did he put another vin on it and have it titled as something similar?

Damn, I sure wouldn't want to advertise something like that here! All the "helpful" types....

Canadians immigrating to the U.S. are allowed to bring in "1" canadian registered vehicle.

This is why you see quite a few jdm and canadian diesels in the U.S. that have legally made their way across the border. I forgot exactly where in the importation code this is-but its basically "fully" exempted from other importation rules-so basically if its owned by a canuck-and regd legally in Canada- then the Canuck can move here and bring "1" of his vehicles only-no questions asked. They are not grey market vehicles and it doesnt cost them anything extra.

The other route is importing thru a regd importer which is then subjected to the 25yr rule/ emissions/carb etc.

Another neat rule is that you can drive a Canadian reg'd vehicle in the U.S. for up to 3 years under Canadian insurance. hence- if you(U.S.resident) can establish residency in canada (mailing address)....get a drivers liscense- reg. and insure a Canadian vehicle there.......you can drive it back to the U.S. and drive it for 3 years in the U.S. without violating any laws in the U.S. or Canada. Have a friend in Canada who can collect your mail--->spend a few weeks vacation getting your liscense and reg. up there-----> drive back a 1995 diesel 80series/etc........and drive around for 3 years on the up n up---->cross back into Canada once in those 3 years...........and reset your 3 year clock. Dual residency has its privaledges.

Anytime you ask anyone how they registered a jdm vehicle into USA under 25 years old they're always VERY hush hush about it. This makes me wonder....

There are a number of ways. Just because you are not familiar with them does not give you the right to declare all this illegal. There are a large number of late toyota diesels in the US, LHD and RHD. Most are perfectly legal. Loopholes exist, and if they were advertised they'd be closed very soon, hence the secrecy.

....get a drivers liscense-

Not sure about some of the other Canadian provinces, but here in BC this would be a stumbling block....you would have to prove that you are legal to live in BC, and then hand in your current drivers licence from where ever you moved from.
FWIW

Cheers,

Not sure on JDM, but why is the gauge cluster in MPH as the main speed reading, shouldnt it be in Km/h? If this got changed out because of importation guidelines, then wouldnt the actual miles have changed also, as in set to zero? Again not sure on this, and I want it either way!
