hi fellas, was doing some testing today after installing my Autometer sport comp pyro and boost guages, was wondering about the results i got, when sitting on 100km/h (about 60mph) i find my EGT (probe mounted post turbo about 2 inch from turbo in the dump pipe) is around 450 deg Celsius and my boost sits on about 9psi constantly @ about 2000rpm, 110km/h EGT is about 475 deg C boost sits on max which is set at 11.5 psi @ 2200rpm. 1st question is this high? fuel definatly isnt stock the tamper tag is long gone so someone may have messed with it and it has a diesel tuning sticker on the fuel cap inside so mabey has been to a shop once upon a time who knows?, 2nd question is it normal for these engines to sit on this kind of boost pressure at cruising speeds ? ive owned a few turbo cars only petrol ones and they dont usually sit on boost while cruising, is it safe to sit on 11.5 psi for a few hours drive?

any input appreciated

not sure about your egts as my pyro it pre turbo. but i have my boost up around 14psi and when cruising at 100km/h it sits on 10psi and when sitting in 110km/h it's at around 13psi. been that way around 1 year with a lot on country driving and no problems as yet.

thanks for the the reply mate,

do you have a intercooler installed to run 14psi? how's the oil consumption running 14psi do you get much blow by? i was thinking about turning my boost up a touch more mines at 11.5 psi now but im not sure about if it will loose too much oil through blow by, mine seems to use about 700ml last change about 6000k's but i think also my valve stem seals may be a tad leaky. not really a major problem they still make oil :p

i have an intercooler sitting in the shed to install but haven't gotten around to it yet, on the list of this to do! I also have a catch can sitting in the shed also waiting to be installed lol. In regards to oil consumption didn't notice it go up, i use around 500ml per oil change, which i do religiously at 5000km.

Definately on high side, im getting around 330'C PREturbo when cruising at 90km/h, thats with stock boost and fuel along with 3" pipe...

3" exhaust will definitely lower your EGT's, so that's not exactly apples to apples anymore.;)

Well i was cruising at 380'C with standard exhaust.... so not so big difference anyway... 450'C postturbo is still hot...

hmm i did think it seemed a tad hot, mabey who ever touched the pump previously wound the fuel screw out too far. i was thinking of adding a top mount intercooler eventually. also will a snorkel drop EGT's seeing how it would be getting alot more cool air especialy at highway speeds? i was goin to get a snorkel soon (not so much for trying to lower EGTs but to get rid of the horribly placed stock air intake for water crossings)

Adjusting the fuel screw will cost you nothing and have more of an impact than anything else......just saying.

I might have a look at it this weekend , turn it back in 1/4 of a turn at a time and test it , what's acceptable/safe egt for cruising at 100km/hr post turbo ?

Was this post turbo egts?

because you placed you egt sensor after the turbo, ie in your dump pip, the temps that you are getting are called post turbo. I have mine before my turbo, ie in my exhaust manifold, there for I get pre turbo.
there is much debate on where is better but from what i read pre turbo is more accurate as you get less heat loss and more truer temps straight from the engine.

The post turbo temps are high for cruise however yours is obviously auto if 2000 @ 110, so it will be loaded up more with the taller gearing. Also since there is no intercooler installed ( I am guessing with high temps) and stock turbo, its probably near enough to be correct. My guess is you dont have much spare torque available at 110 for in gear acceleration? If this is the case (like your at 80% of available torque), then yours temps are about right.

Precisely why people as a first pass generally change exhaust and install an intercooler. These two things will drop your EGT's a whoppong 60-80 deg C. A turbo change as well will see your post turbo cruise EGT's at ~ 320-350

As a budget install, grab an eBay cooler that fits and get an exhaust mob to do the plumbing in 2.5" exhaust tube and paint it. Turbo dump pipe on 12HT is actually excellent (best of all factory turbos from Toyota), so do dump back 3" exhaust, only 1 muffler required to keep it quiet.

Yea Shes got the the big auto behind it , it sits on 100-110 easy enough it actually seems like it's easier to accelerate from about 110 than 100 mainly because at 100 it sits on about 9psi and slowly climbs to full boost at 110 it's really on song sitting at about 2200rpm it's on full boost about 11.5-12 psi just the few more psi in boost pressure seem to get her up and going alot better, I have heard that the 12ht dump pipes are quite good, I have a 3" exhaust dump pipe back with 1 muffler on the truck already , I probably add a top mount cooler soon and also a snorkel, back to that question do u think a snorkel will drop egts? Seeing how the motor would be getting
Much cooler air i assume it would?

A top mount is easier to fit, but unless it is a water to air, I'd be not so sure about the capacity to cool the air compared to a front mount.

Have a look at my recent installation of a front mount. Not the easiest to do, but a good outcome in the end. Since the last photo on the website, I've refitted the grilled and painted it all black. Looks neat.
