Hi all.

Great forum you have here. Good tech tips, altough mostly oriented for American Toyotas.

I have almost closed a deal to buy a Toyota HJ60 - 1987, 4.000cc atmospheric Diesel engine.

Since my old rig was a UMM ( http://joao.pimenta.googlepages.com/home ), I will be losing a lot of offroad capabilities, because of the trunk . I plan to remove the rear bumper to have a little more angle while exiting a hill... but i need to lift the car, to really improve on this matter.

My questions are :

1 - what kind of tyres can my engine handle without overheating, and have you tried it ? ( 31, 33 perhaps 35 ? )

2 - What is the cheapest way to lift the car without doing a SOA mod (i'm afraid of SOA because of laterall inclination).

Thanks in advance,

Pimenta

Welcome...

1st question is what are your diff ratios, and are you manual or auto tranny.

Check your build plate on the firewall to this: http://www.birfield.com/modules.php?name=TLCFAQ&p=/~ramullen/FAQ/TEXT/09-01.html

What shape is the current suspension? Stock?

If you want to stay SUA (spring under axle) and need to replace the springs then you could consider one of the Ozzy 50mm lifts. Then consider a moderate body lift of 1.0 or 1.5". This should allow running 35" tires, though the front "might" hit the front of the inner fender on compression. Your gearing may well be an issue depending on what your stock diff ratios are.

There is also a parabolic spring kit available in Europe that gives some lift. I do not recall the website/prices and have no input on durability.

33's and a moderate 50mm lift should fit and work fine, however again...if you have 3:70 you will notice it for sure.

Install a pyrometer, and run the engine by the exhaust temps.

Consider cutting the rockers to gain more clearance. If you do a search in the 6* series section there are neumerous threads and pictures on this mod. Here is an example of one: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=85060&highlight=cut+rockers

Also, do a seach in the 6* series area about body lifts and tire fitment. There is one thread just started by a fellow in Oz:https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=93107

I am sure many others will pitch and and offer opinion as well.

why not SO . ? if you do with flat ( stock ) springs you get better ride .. with good clearance for 35" tires ..

IMOP .. regear to 4.56 would be nice for you aplication. ( with 35" ) so if you go with 33" 4.11 are your best bet.

This will do better with the 60 series section guys. I will move it there but keep a redirect here so HJ60 guys can also answer.

Hi all

Thank you for the responses, but i still don't have the "magic plate" that would give you guys the crucial info (i'll have it tomorrow).

The gearbox is 5 speed manual, I don't know the ratios ... anyway I doubt if I can get the parts I want to change the ratios here in Portugal.

Thank you for the cuted rockers mod, I'll think it's a very good way to get more clearance.

It's usual in my country for low budget offroader (like me) to "stiffen up" the springs (don't know the english term for that) . Basicly its done in a shop warming up the iron and giving it more curvature ( i guess you know what i'm talking about here) ... will this mod be enough to get 33's ?

thanks

I thought yes ... and is a easy option .. but you gonna get and stiff suspension.

Hi, thanks for that reply.

Do you know any online parts dealer (that ships overseas) where I can get the parts I need to regear to 4.11 ?

What are these parts exactly?

Thanks

My favorite shop .. MAF

But there are many other options .. and for swap from 3.70 to 4.11 yoy only need the gears .. thinking all you bearings and axle seals are fine.
