HJ-61 on 54"s

That is 100% Dana 60 axles with some kind of either custom portal or maybe even the moggy or merc bolt on portals. Pretty common mod when you get to the 40" range.

I worked with a few Sydney boys when I was in hotrods and we did these for some of the early rigs running 44's coupled with hydro steer and eventually rear steer and then a custom drop down portal that was heads and shoulders above the moggy ones. The bloke who was building them was a mechanical fitter machinist engineer god but unfortunately he has since passed and is missed with heavy hearts at every event.

Without hijacking the thread you should all take a few minutes to watch his legacy machine if you haven't already seen it.

here are a few updated pics, starting to look quite good, but most of the time apparently is going towards, you guessed it, rust repair :)

Longer front end.

file.php

Some plastics work on the flares, they´ll be huge.

file.php

Widening the flares.

file.php

Not sure what´s up with the grille.

file.php

New brakes and bolt pattern.

That´s it for now, looking forward to see it finished.

man those pinions are long.

Strapped in some portals too! This is beginning to look like an Aussie rig! I could be wrong but that looks like a hilux/surf grill. Can't say I like it too much, it looks like a GQ.

I love the bobbed look but I still want the 60 ute.

That was awesome :D It's hilarious that you put such huge tires on but didn't even have enough traction to back out of the shop!!

hehe there is no front driveshaft in it yet and the tranny was missing a little oil so i was slipping a bit but its fixed now :)

I am really liking it! Right up until the grill went in, the factory grill looks way nicer.
But a pretty cool build for sure.

Hello there mudders, time for a little update on this project.

So they got it rolling, front end lengthened and flares coming along nicely, I´ll let the pics talk:

they drove to the scales and it weighted in at 2540kgs... a bit hefty.

what a beauty, seriously good job. 2540 KG isn't so bad, mine came in at 6000lbs (2721KG) and it doesn;t have your huge tires.

EDIT:
One of our scales must be off, there's no way yours is lighter than mine.

well I´don´t think it´s got any interior and there was no fuel in it to speak of, will probably be closer to 2700-2800 when ready.

My 38" HJ-61 was 2400kg with 2 people and very little gear.

but 2700? that's alot for a cruiser :S

Yeah the humvee tires I put on weigh about 150 lbs/corner, but they are only 37 inches. I'll double check my rig's weight next week to verify that i didn;t get a bad scale. I love the way yours looks.

Nuts!
