Hi All:

I am re-building a 1986 HJ-60 with the 2H diesel engine. I've re-set the body and started the engine. However, the engine ru8ns for about 45 seconds and shuts off. I believe that wire from the fuel control relay to the oil pressure switch has not been connected.
I'm out of the country until mid-May, but could use some advise or help with this issue.
Also, I have a 2F engine and transmission for the FJ-60 parts car that needs a new home.

Sounds to me like you are having an issue related to the low oil pressure cutoff system of the EDIC (as you noted). If the wire were simply not connected though, you would never have a problem. The oil pressure switch is normally closed with low pressure, and normally open with pressure while the engine is running.

You might have a switch stuck in the closed position, or a short in the wiring between the oil pressure switch and the EDIC relay.

Oil Switch

Dan:

Since I can see the oil switch and it is not wired, I'm sure that the oil pressure switch is not connected to the fuel control. Do you have an idea as to which wire from the fuel control goes tot the switch. It appears that the fuel control allows the engine to start and run for 30-45 seconds, then I can hear the fuel relay open and the engine shuts down. I assume that the oil switch grounds the fuel control to make the circuit.

It should be a yellow wire, perhaps with a black stripe--off the top of my head. No FSM handy at the moment, but I'm 99% sure that's right.

The oil pressure switch does ground out, and "makes the circuit" when there is low pressure, but again, if it were simply unplugged you would never "make the circuit" and signal for an oil pressure shutdown. The EDIC relay will shut the engine down anytime that wire grounds out (usually through the oil pressure switch), other than the fact that it disregards the low oil pressure signal for a period of time after the starter has been energized. (our 3B EDIC is 22 seconds, other are different, and yours sounds to be 45 seconds).

If you say that the wire isn't connected to the oil pressure switch, I'd bet that the loose wire end is dangling around and grounding out to the frame, block, or body somehow. Start by looking for single yellow wires in the vicinity of the oil pressure switch that are loose. On an HJ-60, I believe they exit the firewall on the left hand side of the engine compartment, but I have never looked that closely at an HJ-60 in person to have firsthand knowledge.

My wiring diagram is from an after market HJ service manual. The diagram is on 8.5x11 sheets and is very hard to read. I've tried to get a diagram from the Abq Toyota dealer without any luck. Do you have a source that you can share that may be able to get the factory diagram.

Yes. My 60 series FSM (or the one sold by SOR) would include the HJ-60.

Unfortunately, I highly doubt I will be back to the shop for a few months to even have a chance of scanning those pages for you.

You're looking for the 60 series chassis manual (FSM), not the engine book.
