So, this weekend my wife and I headed north to Wisconsin for a 28 year anniversary road trip and stumbled upon the Trans-Wisconsin Adventure Trail. The Trans-Wisconsin Adventure Trail is a route set up mainly for Expedition Motorcycles, but accommodates overland 4x4 vehicular travel as well. There are some exceptions where a particular segment may be limited to UTV or motorcycle traffic, but the alternate Overland route is fantastic fun for any decent 4x4 vehicle set up with gear for deep sand, extraction equipment, a winch, etc... (A set of MaxxTraxx will perform perfect here.)
At any rate, the T.W.A.T. begins (officially) at the POINT OF ORIGIN, near Galena, Illinois and extends some 611 miles to near Cornucopia, Wi where it meets the northernmost point of Wisconsin and Lake Superior.
I highly recommend anyone interested in the route look up the official website, the route listed on google maps, Lone Wolf Expeditions, Expedition Portal and other resources available.
Spring and summer rainfalls result in multiple water crossings and a much more challenging experience, but we plan on a fall trip where autumn leaves and drier conditions will provide a much easier passage in the old 1979 FJ40 Landcruiser that we are running. This old beast should be able to handle whatever the trail throws at it, especially since it is fully equipped for such challenges.
There are numerous scenic landmarks along the way, along with some phenomenal eating and drinking opportunities to be discovered. At any rate, it was great to find such a unique and fun route so close to home, and long enough to really feel like a mini-expedition of sorts.
Perfect for weekend warriors, as my wife and I have proven to be.
Hope this brings a few of you the same enjoyment it has for us, and we encourage you to take good care of this great opportunity in a responsible and respectful manner so that it is a route we can all enjoy for years to come.

Thought you were just being ‘witty’ with the acronym! The trail is really referred to as this? Anyway....
take a camera!

This sounds pretty cool. Also quite the thread title to stumble upon while slightly(or more) intoxicated.
