Hit a curb, now I have a 3" gash in the side of one of my BFG A/T's Shoud I....?

The gash is about an 1/8" deep on the sidewall. The guy at the tire shop said it is most likely cosmetic. Should I replace the tire?

Thanks,

TT

It's your judgement call. I personally will not run a tire on the highway with any sidewall damage whatsoever; I'd make it a spare. Ask the guy at the tire shop if he's good for any damage his opinion causes if you leave it on.

I'll echo elmariachi and say that I would not want to run tires with any damage or defect, its just not worth it. Did you get the tire hazard warranty? If so just replace it that is what that policy is there for. If not, well, you know what to add to your next tire purchase. Filter everything I say through my paranoia though! :D

I just bought some new tires (REVOS) and I'm finding that fewer and fewer ATs are sold with road hazard warranties anymore....

Consider yourself luck if you can find it!

I would get a new tire (or two if there is wear)...$100-200 bucks is not worth it.

I say run it. :D

I had some A/T's that had some nice gouges in them from rocks and they were fine till the end of their tread. However, once I had some BFG Muds that had a 1/4 inch deep (maybe less) cut in the sidewall that created about an inch flap (I could see the white layers of the tire) that blew out on me on the freeway. When it gave out I was going 70 mph and it was an uneventful experience. The truck just seemed a little more squirly than normal. The sidewall just kind grew a hole in it.

So they could be fine or they could blow out on you. How about some pics?

Wow, that's strange, when I got my Revos they pratically pushed the lifetime warranty policy on me. I ask and re-asked about damage from off-road use and they stated any damage was covered except vandalism. If I had even a slight gash in the sidewall, I'd take the tire to them and first ask and then insist on another tire.

While on this subject let me add another slight detour by saying that more and more larger tire shops I'm seeing here are pushing lifetime alignment warranties. I got one with my revos for 125 and its for the lifetime of the VEHICLE not just those four tires so it works out to be a super sweet deal if you intend to keep the vehicle.

The particular Bridgestone dealer I went to has super high tech wheel and tire balancers and an even higher tech alignment machine (not that there's much to align on the 80) and he actually looks forward to me coming in and asking to at least check the alignment (like after wheeling), we are also working on setting different setting and seeing how it handles after that. We are currently at 18.5 degrees each side. Anyway, if one shop is hesitant to offer the warranty, just go to another shop; in my opinion it is worth it . HTH.

Regardless of how much or how little your ride is worth or what you put in it, the only thing between you and total disaster are your brakes and tires. NEVER compromise on their quality or standard, and exceed if affordable.

Thanks to all.

I'll be replacing the tire tomorrow and using the damaged one as a spare.
