highschool paint job?

recently i have come across a high school grad here in town that offered to do my paint job CHEAP. i have spent alot of time on my truck restoring it and don't want to cut corners but i also can't afford a 5k and up paint job from a shop either.

this kid's credentials include being taught by a teacher who paints hot rods 6k -12k paint jobs and has gone to their local highschool to teach these kids how to paint cars as well. These kids have painted alot of cars in highschool and they looked incredible.i guess i am worried that the paint is going to bubble up later or flake off like my old paint job did.

what precaustions should i take.. or what questions should i ask him to make sure hes doing it properly. i am using good quality paint and i know he lays the paint real evenly but what should i look out for

does this sound like a good deal or should i just fork out the cash so i don't have to worry about it pealing off in five weeks(sarcasm)

any advise is needed

I have often thought about having a tech school do this.

It all comes down to what you could afford to spend on paint. If you have a Maaco budget but want a better paint job this may be a good route to go.

I was self taught in high school/ college. My first paint jobs were terrible, but later on they were outstanding and I did alot of side jobs. With this in mind, your first concern should be what happens before the paint. Prep. is KEY. Many shops cut corners and the paint looks good for a while, them you get the bubbles, flaking paint etc. Make sure all rust and blemishes are taken care of. Check out the paint work that this kid has done and if it meets your standards, let'em have at it. We all started some where.

history on painter ( kid from highschool)

he took this class in livermore high from a guy who owns a body shop. He comes in and teaches throughout the year hon ow to paint 1 stage, 2 stage, custom graphics and candycoats.. just about anything from what i have heard. they teach the kids how to paint and prep PROPERLY and later on in the year they start doing paint jobs for people at the school and outside of the school for 800 labor plus paint. no warranty. they will paint at least 5 cars every couple of months so this painter kid does have some experience.

and i have talked to alot of people for advice and that is exactly what i am going to say:

"Tell him you want at least 40 hrs of prep before he paints " -my64fj40

the plans are line up all the panels and replace alot of the rust holes than mount one last time onto the frame to make sure everything sits correctly

undercoat just the undercarriage

mount tub onto frame final - mask everything off and paint it

ive told the kid we are going to do a 2 base coat 2 clear coat. thats about all the paint i can afford right now.
