High temp paint on exhaust, will it stop rusting?

Curious if I were to cleanup a exhaust pipe that has lots of rust on it, and paint it with some of that high-temp paint, will that keep it from rusting? This would be on my sister's 100-series, which has a fair amount of surface rust underneath it. They use lots of salt where she lives and almost everything under there that can rust is rusting, I'm not overly worried about the exhaust but it is very rusty and if cleaning it up (angle grinder with wire wheel maybe) and painting it would help, then I'd do it. I spent much time under it with a can of Rustoleum paint, just painting random things that were badly rusted, hopefully that paint will stop the rust on those parts, and atleast make it look better.

Thanks,

I don't think so. When I had some muffler work done, the shop included a can of high temp silver paint w/ ceramic. I used it to paint a section of exhaust from the cat to muffler, hoping it would stop a few rust spots. Nope. And I was living in LA, where it never rains. Only way to avoid rust is to get a high-quality stainless catback. Ziebarts in NYS tars the bottom of vehicles. I had that done to my old mini, and the body (except for tailgate) survived 6 winters in Upstate NY w/ really no body rust (and those early 80s mini's were famous for rusting out at the seam of the panel near the rear wheel well, but mine had none). Once the bottom is rusted, you'll have to sand it to remove the rust, then tar/prime it.

Hmm. The problem is most of the rusting is before the cats, well actually all over, oh well, guess we'll just see how long it lasts..

Thanks,
Mark

I would use POR 15. Go to POR15.com for more info.

The exhaust pipe on a 100 series is stainless steel. I doubt you will ever have a problem with it rusting out for as long as you own your 100 series.

Everything is stainless steel from the engine to the exhaust pipe? You sure about that? My sister's '99 had TONS of rust on everything exhaust related. I agree with you it might not rust through, but I don't think it's stainless.

It was stainless on my 95 LC and it is stainless on my 2004 4runner. Now you can get some rust on lower grade stainless which is what you are seeing but like I said it will never rust through as long as you own your LC. I've never heard of a LC having a rusted out exhaust system. Not something to worry about. What I did with my 95 was use cleaner wax on the part that showed. Did it every 6 months when I waxed the LC and it alway looked pretty good.

Huh...ok, good to know. I know the exhaust on my '97 is rusty but hasn't rusted through like you said, smashed and ripped it open, but not rusted through.. :)

Yep POR15 has some manifold stuff that will handle the tempsm
