I'm looking at buying a 99 Tacoma (Xcab, V6, manual, 4x4, shell, loaded) with 200,000 miles. High book is $7000, low $6000. They're asking $4800, so it seems like a pretty sweet deal. Carfax checks out, for what it's worth. Regular maintenance records, and no real problems that I could see.

I'm just worried about the "high" miles (I know for a Toyota 200,000 is just breaking it in...) I know about the head gasket going out on the V6... Are there any other problems I should expect with the mileage? From what I've seen, there are some Tacomas out there pushing 300K+ miles, but I just want to make the right decision.

Thanks!

I bought my '96 new and have 196,000 with lousy maintenance and no problems. Had the head gasket recall done about 80K. Still have original clutch and front disks (third set of pads). It's never let me down or left me stranded.

I can't find any record that it has been replaced, so if I buy it, that will be the first thing that I have done to it. Any ideas how many hours it takes to replace the timing belt?

On the timing belt cover, there is usually a sticker indicating when the last time the belt was replaced. If no such sticker exists, I'd go ahead and change the belt and the water pump. MAKE SURE to get OEM belts, not aftermarket. It's not worth the $5 difference (if that) for a generic belt. Go OEM. Also, look at the rear main seal. If it's busted, you'll see oil coming down the axle. As far as the head gasket goes, that was a problem for the 3.0L V6's and some 96 3.4L's. 97+ have really had no issues of this. Your 99 should be solid.

Also, check out the sticky up top of this forum. There has been a recall on all 95.5-00 Tacoma's (and 01-04's now) with rusted frames. Get under there and see if the frame is okay. But don't worry if it rusts after you buy it---Toyota has put a 15 year warranty on it. Good luck with the purchase.
