My Bj74 does not have a separate switch for the air con. The "temperature" slider control does not seem to have any wires running to it.
How does the ac know to come on?

Okay thanks.
How does the ac know that I am running the fan for cold air, not heating?

The A/C is controlled by the dial switch behind the fan dial switch

Does the A/C portion of the switch have different levels like the fan speed? Mine doesn't and I've wondered if it's broken.
Your fan speed rheostat is most likely damaged.

Why did I not see the split knob for ac?
Losing my mind perhaps.
Thanks agan.

The coils in the resister get hot and fail overtime I just rebuilt mine with a spare 60 series resister I had laying around but they can be brought new.

The switch on the left is the one that almost drove me crazy. :)

I rebuilt mine using a the coils from a 90s Honda out of the local wreckers... Just carefully de-soldered each coil and swapped them out on the damaged coils on mine. Worked great, and its nice having all the speeds back, plus it cost me less than 5 bucks.

The AC switch doesn't have different definite positions like the fan switch does, but where you adjust it to determines the frequency of the AC clutch cycle. Basically, the further up you turn it, the longer the AC cycle, and the colder the air.

Sooooo.
My air con comes on as expected sometimes and sometimes it does not: it is an electrical problem.
Do the ac switches ever go bad or get "buggy"?

Used an ohmmeter to verify that the a/c control functions properly. Variable resistance matches specs from the manual.
