Hi, potential Land Cruiser owner

You see, the Araco factory in Japan is well known for quality control. It turns out the highest quality vehicles in the Toyota line and has assembled *most* of the Land Cruisers made to date. Regulation prevented the Land Cruiser from being imported with a roof rack, so aftermarket racks were bolted to the clean roofs of Cruisers once they had cleared Customs at the Port of Entry to the United States. These racks, when removed, prove to be hiding UGLY screw holes and, often times, rust.

That white truck looks good. Check the service history to see if it's had a head gasket replaced, radiator, radiator hoses...anything to do with the cooling system. Look in the radiator to ensure that the coolant is red...Toyota coolant is red (not green) and is the only coolant that should be used. See if the front end has been serviced i.e. inner axle seals. See when the last time was that it had brake work done. The more that has been attended to, the less you'll need to do in the immediate future.

acf,
If "then who knows" means you'll be rigging it with a tubo charger, HP street tyres, powder coated 18" alloy rims, DVD video, rear curtains, and high end sound systems then PM Tyler for tricks and tips on turning a perfectly capable expedition rig into a pimpmobile.

*tossing head to side ...* - I am like sooooo misunderstood !

I bought my 97 over EBay as well. $12.5K for 85K miles/lockers/one owner/clean carfax/receipts... So, you can certainly find decent deals..

In addition to what has already been said, I would check each body part, doors, hood, l/r fenders, quarter panels, and engine for the non-removable tags that have the VIN numbers imprinted on it. This will ensure that it was not in a serious accident or stripped for parts in the past...

I held out for one with lockers... You won't regret it later... :)

>> And is an aftermarket towing platform necessarily bad? <<

No. Other than some window stickers and the For Sale sign, that was the only vehicle mod that I could detect from the pics you posted.

Thanks for all that.

Front end hasn't been serviced or head gasket replaced; but the rear main seal and a leaky oil pan were at 94k. Also, the starter had been replaced at 69k.
