Hi Lift Part identification/use

Hi everyone, I just scored an old Hi Lift jack that will be a perfect companion to my 65 FJ40. It's even period specific. I have a newer jack and it doesn't have the parts pictured below. Can any ony tell me what they were actually used for. They look like they were to Lock a smally rope via a cam. But why? Since I don't see them sold any more they must not have been that good of an idea. Anyway what ever I can learn about my new old jack would be nice. I did e-mail Hi Lift but no reply yet.

Yup, it's for grabbing and pulling wire. There were a few slightly different designs depending on if it was a HiLift or a Jackall.
