I've watched several videos on winching with the hi-lift. Some say the top of the jack should be towards the anchor and some say the top should be towards the vehicle. Anyone actually use the jack as a winch for other than making a video? If so do you remember the orientation and how was it? Would you consider doing it the other way?

Top toward vehicle means handle position remains constant during pull (pulls vehicle toward handle).
Top toward anchor means handle position moves with each pull (pulls handle and vehicle toward anchor).

Depending upon anchor and/or vehicle position either could be useful, but my preference is to keep the handle in a fixed position with the top toward the vehicle so that I can stand in one spot as I winch.
