Has anyone used the cool cruisers kit for mating the HF55 5 spd with the old transfer case? Apparently it needs longer bolts. I also know that driveshaft modifications are required for pre 85. Would these be the only difficulties in putting an HF55 in a pre 85 60?

Thanks

I'm doing the same thing you are with the H55F. Personally I bought the H55F through CDan - https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=17873 . The main problems will be the difference in bolt lengths and the shifter linkage. Here are the toyota bolt numbers for the T-Case and Tranny mounting are: 90119-12047 for the shorter bolt (need 4), and 90119-12235 for the longer bolts (need 3). I haven't gotten to the linkage situation yet so I have no experience. The easiest route will be to get a linkage set-up from a '85-'87 FJ60 with the longer transmission. Haven't done a write-up yet but when I finish with the rebuild I'll do a write-up.

Hope this helps,

I've done it in my 84. The longer bolts are available from Toyota-just buy them from Dan. Cool Cruisers acts like they are special, but they are standard fare. Getting the driveshafts resized is no big deal either-count on $75 or so per shaft.

The only "kit" you need is a transfer case rebuild kit. If CCoT is offering a "kit", it's likely some off-shore cheapo kit you wouldn't want anyway. Both Mudrak and Cruiseroutfitters have a good and complete kit. The accordian rubber 4wd shaft protecter you should buy from Toyota. The one in the kit is crappy. JMHO

If you do a search, we have discussed this at length, and all the other stuff you need with the swap, like a clutch, pilot bearing, throw out bearing, fork boot, motor mounts etc.

You absolutely will need a new transmission shifter, and a transfer case shifter and linkage. Before you start, make sure you have in hand a t-case shifter from an 85-87 FJ60. The 88 mentioned earlier is incorrect. There is at least another $1000 worth of parts after you buy the transmission, so be sure to budget for that.

Mine has almost 10k miles since the swap-highly reccomended.

You can tell I am not CCoT's biggest fan. I reccomend you get the tranny from Dan, with all the other OEM stuff you need, and get the t-case rebuild kit from Mudrak or Cruiseroutfitters. Count on a few heavy hot days under the cruiser.

I have just dropped my H55 into my 87' FJ-60. Is the 87 T-case shifter the right one? I ask becuase when I try to pull the lever down into 4H it hits the sheet metal.
Here is the shifter position in 2H

I know I can remove the shifter and bend it or trim some body sheet metal, but I thought this was the correct shifter (87 FJ-60)? Is that my only recourse, or do I have the wrong part?

Something does not look right. I used an 87 shifter and an 87 transfer case on mine and it fit perfectly. Is this an FJ60 or an FJ62 we are looking at in the pics?

If its a 60, are you sure you have the correct linkage?

If it's a 62, then all bets are off, I have no idea if the hole is in the right place.

Cruiserdrew you were right. In my haste I used the FJ-40 shifter instead of the FJ-60 shfter. Everything is where it should be now. Thanks.

I'm selling a brand new (in the box) H55 + drive shafts from a newer model 60 series, the 5-speed knob, and the gasket kit for $1,750. I'm in Eugene, Or. Just thought I'd mention it.
