Ironically, I tested this theory over Christmas. Pissed every year that it costs so much to bring a nice road bike to Florida for our annual 3 week vacation, I bought a $79 bike at Target down there. I ordered it before we flew down and picking it up was 10 minutes.
Sure, it weighed a ton and the brakes were scary but I got several hundred miles of good riding out of it, then donated it to the Sheriff's Dept for their kids program when I left. Perhaps the best part was hunting down dweebs on $5000 bikes and passing them. My full riding kit was a giveaway I'm sure, but one guy about had a coronary trying to catch me for a full 10 miles. Guess he never saw my mini helmet mirror....
The huge downside was the cheap bikes have cranks that are not threaded for clipless pedals.
Nice of you to donate the bike! Yes, it's rider not the bike, a $79 bike should do ok on the road but be careful when you start doing crazy things with it on technical trails. I know, I have seen it on the trail. Ouch!
