Hello Members,

I am very, very new, like a newborn in the 4x4 world. I was always a sedan baby, but after past off-road trips, I became a fan of 4x4s. I went online and bought a cheap 5 door LC LJ79 with a 2L Turbo Engine. I changed the shocks, springs, bushes, bearings, and gear stuff (clutch plate and pressure plate), changed the front axle (as the previous owner was driving this 4x4 like a normal 800cc car without front diff), and hub lock conversion from elec. to manual engine tuning and general maintenance (yet there is sludgy water in the radiator even after the radiator service). Then I completed the ground-up bodywork, which was full of rust. had to change a lot of panels and had done with a lot of repairs. Finally, after 1 year and 2 months, I got the LC back with still some pertaining issues, which I am not sure how to tackle as I got scammed and looted due to false claims by the mechanic. Following are the points on which I need some help: mechanical, electrical and aesthetic.

1. There is an electrical fault at the dashboard where the box thing in the dashboard shows the temperature is always on even after the key is out and the car is locked. if i hit some wires under the steering box, it goes but comes eventually if my foot strikes against it.
2. The power windows are direct i.e., with no key in the ignition, they are operatable and working and I suspect there might be other current leakages
3. I am not sure, but it does not have any AC, nor does the AC blower work. need some guide as to where is the blower, how it works and what to check
4. Even after the bodywork I got scammed with, there are 1 to 2 mm holes in the driver-side floor. I am afraid to do any welding work due to the fuel lines and wiring going through. Can I use Bondo or body filler to cover those holes? Or something DIY or cheap? I need advice and help.
5. The rear quarter glass, which is a big fixed piece that is operated through a latch (not sure about its actual name), is crackling due to a missing bolt. I tried to search for that, but I did not find any way to open it. What kind of screw or bolt can I use to make sure it's watertight and not loose.
6. There is a seepage at the driver's side of the engine block. i am not sure from where the oil is dripping as from the top, it seems clear.
7. The steering wheel has some play, i.e., 2 3 degrees. I talked to one of the mechanics who scammed me in this project, and he mentioned that it's natural in all LC LJ series. all LC steering has some play, and its not fixable

These are some of the top things i have identified during the few days of having the LC back. I am a newborn in this 4x4 world, which is giving me a lot of anxiety and depression. I came to this forum to get help so all of you gurus can advise and help me in solving my issue. in the past year, I got scammed multiple times, causing me to lose a lot of money.

Hi
Sorry to hear you had been scammed.
Your issues are hard to remote diagnose.
So here are some basics:
- Get a workshop manual FSM for your rig.
Check here: FAQ - Online Repair Manual Sources - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/online-repair-manual-sources.185322/unread.
Probably somebody has a PDF copy to share.
The manual also has the electric wiring diagram and info where switches and relays are located (e.g for the power windows).
- Dare looking behind things. Sounds funny, but I feel every beginner who is reluctant to undo something. But nothing gets fixed by only looking at it.
Open the dash and check the wiring. On most older rigs some dogy electrics by the PO can be found.
- On the AC (or do you refer to the blower/heater only): Most ACs only work with the blower on at least on lowest level. So check whether the blower works at all. If not (beside faulty power supply), the resistor is the most common suspect.
- Fix for holes in floor depends on where exactly they are and how big they are. I doubt 1-2mm; Usually there is more around. Pull the carpet or mat for better diagnose. Pic would help. Electric harness should be in the door step and can be pulled out of the way. Fuel line is on the frame. Usually there is distance enough for a safe welding (if somebody with some experience and safety precautions- welding blanket- does it).
- Oil leak: Clean the area thoroughly (rags, brake cleaner) and observe. Pic would help diagnosis.
- Steering: Have somebody slowly wiggle the steering wheel and you check for play in the steering linkage / tie rod ends. Jack up the rig and check wheels for play in knuckles and bearings by wiggeling the wheels in 12-6 and 9-3 position.
Good Luck Ralf

Thank you brother for such a detailed response. The thing is it was my love when i was growing up and seeing this simple but a beastly beauty. But after getting scammed, i m heart broken and my excitement is now very low.

Sure let me fetch some pictures for you and will upload the same.
For wiring, today, i took a deep breath and went in with a Philip head screw driver. While checking the wires,i might have pressed some loop which was badly done by the previous electrician. It shorted and caused the parking lights Smuck connection to burn. There was smoke and i panicked. I dc the battery. The under dash wiring is messed up. What i assume it's there are some wires under the dash which are getting shorted when i go 20% off road and it is effecting the electrical systems.

Malfunction because of bad connections, old plugs and poor ground is one thing to be expected. Open wires that can shortcut and missing fuses are alarming! Disconnect battery and do a thorough inspection of the wiring. You don't want the harness to go up in smoke when driving over a hump.
It's not really rocket science but requires some basic knowledge.

I have the gut feeling you might need somebody experienced to help. Remote diagnosis and remote advice in a forum can't cover everything.
Post up some detailed pics of the rig overall (engine bay, underbody) and of the issues (behind dash, the leak, the window) in particular to help the forum to assess what we can contribute.
Good Luck Ralf
