I am getting a check engine light... I took it into a local Japanese shop ( nice guy put it on his reader for free) and he got a code "A" he said that disconnecting the battery for a min. would reset it ....and it did....cool......then after driving it for 10-15 miles....ITS BACK !!!

specs.....1993 FZJ-80 w/ 152k

only recient work.... 1)Got behind dash to get to the aftermarket stereo 2) installed a new OEM center diff. lock switch

and the light did not come on for a couple days after this work was done. Any ideas guys??

I suspect the recent work has nothing to do with the CEL. But nobody can tell you what the problem is without the code. You need to tell us what the code was.

in2,
as scamper stated you need the mil code. would be a code p401 or something similar. code A is totally irellevant.

Do you have Autozone there? They will read the code for you for free.

It's a 1993. Anyone can read the code for free.

hows that??

I have had 40s and 60s but this is my first new fangled do-dad vehicle. So any advice is welcome

in2,
if there is an autozone they will hook a level OBDI reader for free and check the codes. codes should begin wiht a P if memory serves and be followed by 3-4 digits. thats what you need to tell us and we can point you in the right direction.

Its ok to be old school my 92 I can jump the pins on the controller and the light on the dash flashes in sequence for the code. not sure if you can on a 93..

You don't need no stinking code reader on a 93.......:D

Get out the paper clip and short T1 and TE1 at the data-link connector and read the blinkies......

No letters involved, strictly numbers such as 21, 28, 71, 84, 85 ,86 and so-on.
