If you have nothin pertaining to this then butt out
I am tired of the " try search" and the smart comments.

Here is the skinny.as we all know mini parts are cheaper and more pleantyful then the cruiser stuff.

Here is my thought. sm465 to mini tcase. cruiser, mini hybrid rear axle

the classic cruiser adapter to go from the 465 to cruiser t/c is $550.
the OTT industries adapter for the 465 to mini case is $465
(This is a possibility need to call) the marlin adapter is 465.

The marlin dual case adapter for the mini is $369 hell a complete crawl box is $750
The only option for the cruiser is marlin crawl box. For the sm465 it is $1375

the cruiser moley shafts are $450 and you need to carry 2 spares due to the offset.
the mini moley shafts are $200 per set.

so not to include the stuff I have for the center and mini case I will spend:
sm465 adapter $465
dual case adapter $369
rear shafts $200

that is aprox $1150 for a ratio of 138.875

If I go cruiser stuff I will spend:
toy box $1375
shafts $450

that is aprox $1825 and I will have a ratio of 140 .7

And I have the ability to go W/ 4.7 in both cases for over 500:1(That is sick gear and I would never need thet much.)

now despite the $ and dedication to the cruiser stuff . Which will be the strongest setup? And well the $700 diffrence almost makes this simple and doable.

As far as the labor ! well it gives me something to do.

you could go sm465 to np203 to lc case for less than the setup you are looking at now i see sm465 to np203 adapters go for $125-$250 and a np203 to lc is $515 from AA just my 2 cents

If I was going to keep the one piece case (that I regret doing) I would go with a NP203 to the 16 spline case. In my case I did it behind a TH400.

Better yet, spend the few extra dollars and get a NP 203 to 19 spline split case.

If you could go to a mini doubler I would do that. I never see mini guys with case problems. Hybrid rears are easy and cheap to do. Gears are available. They are available for the split case, but you can get an Orion with 4:1 for less money.

4:1 crawler box in front of a 16 spline case sounds like you'd need to carry extra cases with you where ever you went.

I just blew up my third one piece case. Blew the front drive out of the first two. This one I split in half at the countershaft.

I would do a 465 to a 4.7 mini case and then make a hybrid, centered rear axle. Let's you run the minitruck shafts, which held up great for me with 38's & a V8.

Twin-stick the mini case while you're in there for 2LO..

Whatever route you go, I would definitely go with one that has a center rear output. The hybrid centered rear axle works well, I ran one for a couple of years. There are many more future options (t-case and axle) with a centered output instead of an offset output.

Thanks for the post this is the option that I desire. I called marlin today and they will sell the sm465 to mini case adapter for $465(funny the price is the same as the tranny) this will alow for a 1" adapter vs the 5" adapter from ott ind. At the same time I will go with the toybox @ 2.28 and t/c @ 4.7.

I feel this W/ a hybrid rear will give me a stronger setup for less $$$$$$.

:crybaby: :crybaby:

If you are going to spend the time and money to make a centered rear axle housing, then why not get rid of the Toyota transfer case all together, and go with a Dana 300, or one of the variants available?

Front dig, far superior upgraded aftermarket parts availability, significantly stronger, even in a stock design.

:meh:

I run a 420/4.3 Atlas and would not think of putting a mini-truck case into a Land Cruiser, if I were going to really be beating on my junk....

Like the wise one hints at, Mini truck T-case outputs are not strong.

I would go the route of the d300 as he suggests, in fact, i'm in the middle of doing it myself, 420/5.0 Atlas here.

Adapters for sm465/420 are ~$500

how about using a 60 series split case (cheap) and 4 speed w/AA rock box ($750ish) gives you plenty of low gearing and just keep your LC offset rear end? and don't even waste your money on the LC chromo shafts....

x2 I love my setup.

If this is an off-road rig only, why not go with the SM420 straight away? The adapters are the same price and that gets you to 7:1 right away

All the gears are straight cut though so its loud as hell on the hwy. Go with the 465 if you DD it alot

The only gears that are straight cut in an sm420 are 1st and reverse, and those gears are only meshed when engaged. 2nd and 3rd are helical, and obviously there are no ‘gears’ for 4th.

420s are hard to find in the south. It is only driven to and from the trails 100 miles max. even 4x4 465 s are hard to find. I would like to find a sm420/np203 I would then use that as my doubler and buy the adapter to the lc t/c.

I would like to find a sm420/np203...

FYI-

The 420 did not ever have the 203 case mated to it from the factory.

The 465 did.

Why the hell would you do that?

So you could compete with gumby in the "I broke my transfer case this weekend" contest and see who destroys more transfer cases over the next couple years? I think you are down four right now...

So I am still up in the air on the tranny , crawl box , t/c combo. So what is the strongest config? With the lowest adapter price.

centered rear is not a problem As i have already started the hybrid axle build . And if I dont use it I will sell it .

i just noticed that you live in Fl, are you going to wheel in the south mainly? i've gotten to use my low-low-low ratio about once so far out of prolly twenty trips lol, what a waste of money...

we do bi monthly trips to gulches , grey rock or tellico. And this year we are planing a run to moab. Ane we wheel in some pretty sick lime rock quaries with lots of large rock and trickey off camber situations. we average 1 roll per trip.

I could have sworn they were straight cut all the way. Why the hell is the 420 so much louder in 1:1 than the 465? Just a matter of better tolerances and quality control?

Watch your local CL and instead of searching for the words sm420 or sm465 search the word "granny" in autoparts. Your average redneck has no idea what the tranny code is, all they know is it has a granny low first gear.

I picked up a perfect condition 420 for $100 bucks using this method. I had ZERO luck the other way cause only guys who knew what they had were labeling them as 420's and they wanted 400-500 bucks!!!

I also found my buddy an NV4500 with an NP241 for $350 using this trick.

Either way, Take luck.
