I installed an aftermarket Android CarPlay unit and want to use the factory USB plug on the console.

I ordered the aftermarket Toyota Factory USB Retention Harness listed in the manufacturers fit chart (PAC USB-TY1 for my ‘16), and it didn’t have the right plug. So, I picked up a PAC USB-TY2, which fits the factory connector perfectly (although it supposedly only works up to MY’12).

In short, the USB-TY2 cable snaps in, but it doesn’t seem to function as expected.

I know that my factory radio “sees” my phone fine when everything is stock. I know the aftermarket radio “sees” my phone when I plug the phone cable directly into the CarKit dongle on the USB in the aftermarket android system.

But, when I insert the USB-TY2 harness in the middle, the aftermarket radio can’t “see” my phone anymore.

Stock (plays music on factory radio and charges phone) WORKS:
Phone->Lightning cable->factory usb plug

Aftermarket android (plays music on CarPlay) WORKS:
Phone->Lightning cable->CarKit dongle->usb cable in aftermarket android system

Desired (charge and play CarPlay using factory usb plug) DOESN’T WORK:
Phone->Lightning cable->factory usb plug->USB TY2 harness->CarKit dongle->usb cable in aftermarket android system

Any suggestions?

Also, I suppose there is some chance that it might be a defective cable, but I don’t know how to test it, except maybe to be sure the + and ground work and all four wires have continuity. Any tips here?

Well, I bought a brand name harness, and it works as designed. The no-name usb ty-2 from the local car stereo place was defective. The PAC brand works properly. There’s a lesson to be learned there, I suppose.
