94 FJ80 Transmission Problems,

Symptoms: When I put the shifter in 'D' the car wont accelerate. Same thing when I put it in '2'. On the other hand when I sart in 'L' it shifts and then I put it back to 'D' the car shifts normal. Moving it back to P then to D it seems to slip again.

Just started happening today.

Fluid is new and full.

Probably the shift solenoids. Not too big a job and not too spendy. I think Cruiserdan has a thread on the replacement. If not, a couple of others have had to do the same repair.

Fairly common problem on those old bus transmissions. :D

Can't find his post for some reason. I tried the search function.

Found it, thanks!

So would you suggest for me to take it to Toyota and have them pull the codes? I assume that it is not possible for myself to do the diagnostics.

BTW which one(s) do you think it sounds as if I should replace?

- reverse works normal
- 'L' is normal
- '2' and '3' abnormal

Once I let it shift in 'L' and after that put it in 'D' all work well iaw it shifts seems like fine.

I am not sure of the procedure but I am certain you can pull the transmission codes yourself using a paperclip and the diagnostic connector under the bonnet, on the right side of the firewall.

Look for posts that describe which two connectors to jumper. Keep in mind that the tranny codes will probably be a different procedure than the engine codes. The procedure and the meaning of the codes will be covered in the FSM. If you plan to work on your truck you will need the Factory Service Manual (at a minimum) and you can order one from MDC or download an electronic copy from TIS for $10 and several hours of your time.

For searching you can use keywords=shift solenoid and limit your search to the 80-Section. You will probably pick up other topics (like shift lock solenoid) but sifting through those posts shouldn't take very long. I am sure that someone has described the procedure for pulling the tranny codes and replacing those solenoids.

Thanks for all the help. Got her done! It ended up spitting out a Code 64 on the O/D light indicator. I replaced the Lock up Solonoid and the #1 Shift Solonoid and the problem is GONE!
Pan was completely clean. It is a '94 and I have 236,000 miles on her. She runs like a CHAMP again.

Thanks!:)

Thanks for closing the loop on this thread. We all really appreciate this as many times we are left wondering if the suggestions made worked or not.

Glad everything is working for you again!
